Staddle stones were primarily used to elevate granaries, haystacks, and other agricultural buildings off the ground. This elevation served to protect stored crops and materials from dampness and vermin like rats and mice, as the domed cap made it difficult for rodents to climb.

Exactly right David. The flat steel legs avoided a leak in the fit of your gas mask. Funnily enough the army didn't give me mine until I broke my civvy glasses whist we were on a shoot in West Germany at Sennerlager.
