Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Reflecting on a lovely meeting with two very special people yesterday.
Today I am back to normal.... I shall be in the shed first thing doing useful things to my engine and later I shall be doing a bit of shopping on the web, I need some cheerful curtains for my kitchen! The rest of the day I shall be resting, gathering strength for a busy week of travelling and visiting with Susan. We are working our way through a mini bucket list!
Sue, that's how I know the Marble Church also, we used to call in on our way to Rhyl and Anglesey.....

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
This morning I bolted the top caps down tight onto the bottom brasses, had a measure and marked a centre for the bore. Then I took the crosshead guides off and put a better finish on the face of the slide in the bed. Then I set the bed up under the pillar drill and bored a 3/16" pilot hole to check my accuracy. That was satisfactory so I finished up with the half inch drill. I shall test fit the shaft tomorrow.... Now for breakfast.

Morning
What a hot day yesterday ,34 degrees though thankfully there was a very cooling breeze under the trees in the garden. It was still 28 degrees, in the house when we came to bed despite having blinds down and all the fans in the house on. It is already 20 degrees this morning. It was practically impossible to sleep until about 5 even though we have a portable air cooler/ air conditioner on in the bedroom. Remember we are in our cool summer bedroom now , it would have been awful in the master bedroom. Thankfully today is the last of the very hot weather and temperatures return to a more normal 24 degrees from tomorrow. Barbara and Bill will be here from Friday for a week and will be sleeping in that other room. There is a cooler option but the master bedroom has an en suite
Due to the heat again today will be relatively inactive. We intend going to La Gacilly to book Sunday lunch for next week and have a walk in the shade looking at the annual photo exhibition. Have a good day all

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Morning Sue.... Yes it's been hot in bed even in my cool north facing bedroom. We are into more reasonable temperatures, in fact it could be quite gloomy for a couple of days and as cool as 17C for a high which will be a change.
Susan is chauferring me round on some visits and today we might have a short set off , I shall have to make a call when she gets here....
Right now I'm going to be adventurous and shop for some curtains for the kitchen on line!

I shall decline early doors in the shed because I overslept and am running late this morning. Later after second sleep I am going to have coffee with two friends of mine I haven't seen for years, all part of my Bucket List tour....

Morning
Thankfully it was a bit cooler during the night and we slept better. This morning is so dark I thought it was an hour earlier, anyway it is set to clear and be a cooler 29 degrees. We didn’t do our trip to La Gacilly yesterday, it was far too hot so we intend going this afternoon after a bit of gardening. Bob wants to prune the last few bushes and I want to tidy the veggie garden a little, all before it gets too sunny. After changing the bedding and doing a bit of washing, gardening and apple picking we spent most of yesterday reading under the trees. Have a good day all

I have no social engagements today and was up in good time so I am looking forwards to a quiet normal day. I shall start it by doing an hour in the shed and just maybe, a bit of casting painting later this morning!

This morning I fitted the crankshaft in its bearings. As is usual, I had to do quite a bit of adjusting before I was satisfied. It's a snug fit but that's how it should be at this stage of the build. Now for breakfast.

Morning
Its another dark start to the day, I have had to put the light on in the bedroom to write this. Its due to be 24 degrees with cloud and a little rain this afternoon. I doubt it will be much. It will be nice to be cooler after over a week of very hot weather.
Today I have a little upstairs and master bedroom cleaning to do ready for Barbara and Bill arriving on Friday. We are actually going up to meet them on Thursday at Giverny, Monets Garden, but leaving tomorrow for an extra days sight seeing trip. This morning Bob wants to finish cutting the last two shrubs and its a weekly shop this afternoon. I have zoom pilates at 6.15. Have a good day all

I shall decline the shed and get back to bed early for second sleep after my breakfast because I have another bucket list item to attend to today.... Susan and I are having lunch at the Cow and Calf with Chris Martinez an old friend of mine..... I'm looking forward to it and want to have plenty of time to scrub up!

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Morning
It was a miserable if warm day yesterday. It was 21 degrees reaching 24 fleetingly about 8 o ´clock. There was constant drizzle in the air and at one point enough rain to wet the ground. This stopped Bob finishing cutting the lawn and the shrubs with one left to do.
We did our big shop and that should more or less see us through the next two weeks. There may be a little food to buy but not much. Bob did however pick the rest of the plums and despite trying to avoid loading the freezer I froze another 1.5 kilos and set off another batch of the plum liqueur.
I did not do pilates as I trapped my wrist whilst putting away the ironing board. It was initially very painful with a lot of internal bleeding, now a very big bruise. It looked odd with the vein swelling right up, I had to apply running cold water, a lot of pressure and raise my arm for some time to take the swelling down.
A ´good ´ end to an odd day was when we went to bed. We had just turned the light out when there was an ominous low buzz in the bedroom. It was a hornet which must have come in the partly open bedroom window. We abandoned the bedroom which Bob sprayed and we slept in the two single beds in the room next door, just under the duvets without any bedding otherwise . Bob is busy investigating if the hornet is dead. Yes it is he said, just near my side of the bed. We had to shut all windows tightly instead of leaving them open a crack. It made for another very warm night when we were looking forward to a cool one. We have never slept in this room before and it was mighty hot
This morning we are packing for our two days away, we now have a slight change of plan as we are meeting Bill and Barbara for lunch on Thursday, we had intended meeting them in the evening at the hotel . The forecast is much the same as yesterday but not enough rain to have any impact. Have a good day all.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Morning Sue! Your wrist sounds painful, if nit serious. I have never seen a vein swell. I hope it improves very quickly and tou did right to decline Pilates..... Rest must surely be part of the recovery.
As for the hornet..... I hate the bloody things. Well done Bob for killing it.
I have finished scrubbing up for my set off except for having a shave, that comes next.....

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Hope your wrist gets better soon Sue.
I am too fussy, I know that now. Because I am in Yorkshire and because my daughter is delayed getting back to the UK, I have run out of a few things.
1, Coffee, normally bought from Amazon and only available from Morrisons. I had Campylobacter food poisoning about 10 years ago and have only been able to drink one brand, I find the rest too bitter for my tender palette so I am stuck going to Morrisons today.
2, I have become a wine drinker, only because I have no tele here and damn little to stimulate my brain. I only like one wine - Gewürztraminer - and that is only available from Sainsbury.
3, I have run out of bin liners and I know that my daughter only gets one brand because that's the only brand that fits the bin, hence a trip to Asda.
So today I shall be mainly beggering about in shops.

Nice to have you back
Shops are ok, depending on what you are buying. When we shop here in France we go between. 1.30 and 3 because the french do not seem to shop then and everywhere is quiet. I hate queueing at checkouts. The tills at supermarkets in France are notoriously slow, often only one till being open out of seven. The french customers rarely seem to be ready with their card or cash. Most still use cheques and it takes ages finding them, filling them out, showing ID, putting them through the till system which prints on the amount, putting it away again THEN starting to pack their bags. I often leave Bob in the queue and go for a wander round as my back can’t cope with standing in one position for ages. , DIY shops are the worst with bar code labels unclear or inaccessible. I like shopping for fabric though…

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
You have my sympathy Julie. I caught Campylobacter in Jakarta during a stopover on the way to Australian the early 1980s. Fortunately the symptoms didn't show up until we'd got to Sydney, been picked up by Mrs Tiz's relatives, had a meal and gone to bed. That night I thought I was dying. Severe gut pains, diarrhoea and hallucinations. We stayed a week with the relatives and I wasn't fit to leave the house, I was rushing to the loo about every 4 hours. We were booked on a flight to Auckland at the end of the week to visit her grandparents and I was very lucky that the flight coincided with a gap between loo visits. Grandad was a chemical engineer and ran Auckland's water and sewage company. He travelled a lot in Asia and was familiar with Campylobacter (it was hardly known by anyone in the UK at the time). He knew it was dangerous, treated it as an emergency and got me immediately onto antibiotics.Julie in Norfolk wrote: ↑20 Aug 2025, 09:00 I had Campylobacter food poisoning about 10 years ago...
You and me are lucky, we both survived Campylobacter. Other people less so because it's known for being followed by Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. This attack leads to nerve damage, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. The paralysis starts in the feet and proceeds upwards until it reaches the lungs and stops the person breathing. It's fast and has to be treated immediately.
