FORGOTTEN CORNERS

I met Alberta Hunter in NY in the 80s when she had been 'rediscovered' after years of obscurity working as a nurse. At the time she was singing in The Cookery, a club in Greenwich Village, two nights a week, just her and an accompanist. She was possibly the sexiest woman I ever met.... We corresponded until she died after a fall when she broke her hip.

How cool. I think you've mentioned her before but I didn't look her up. I read that she worked at Coney Island Hospital and they made her retire when they fouind how old she was. Here's "Handyman" - did she have anyone in particuar in mind ? - quite a bit of circumstantial amongst the many wonderful euphemisms. Gets up before dawn - turn my damper down. . . . .

Ethel took me to the Cookery. It was simply a room with long tables and forms with a podium at one end with a piano on it. Bare floorboards and no decorations. People went just for the music......

The remains of a mine engine house at Fox Clough, Colne in 1984. The thriving coal mining industry at Colne is a forgotten corner now but was important once.

The main industry in Thornton in Craven used to be quarrying. Thornton Rock Quarry in about 1900. All long gone now.

That's an interesting photo and shows some intricate track-work so I searched online for a higher resolution photo. I found this web site which has more information, a map and other photos including the one I wanted to see.

Another forgotten aspect of Thornton, the railway station in the valley bottom near Booth Bridge Mill.

My train spotting days are long gone - but at least we now have reverse image search, so here goes. I came up with this image of the same locomotive, `The Great Marquess'. It's a K4 2-6-0 and you can see its number 3442 matches in the two images. In the pic below its on `The Dalesman' rail tour on 4 May 1963 and is standing at Arthington station having arrived from Bradford and about to leave for Leeds. The little plaque above the smokebox door shows RCTS which stands for The Railway Correspondence & Travel Society.

Thornton Manor in the days when it was run as a Care home by the Anchor Trust. It has stood empty for over three years but has now been sold and there are signs it could be reused. I'm not sure but I think the plan is to convert it to high end flats.

I'd wondered if my pic of engine 3442 on 4 May 1963 shows it on the same tour as Stanley's pic of 3442. Now I know it is because the pic here 3442 Barlick shows it at Barlick on the same day. I seem to remember seeing a pic of an engine with `Stanley's Crumpets' on the building behind it so the image might already be on the site. I also found a photo of it at Earby Station on the same day 3442 Earby It's in the third photo down.

The Whit Walks in 1960 outside the soon to be demolished railway station. The lady in the dark two piece is my mother in law Mary Agnes and my wife Vera must be behind the lady in light clothes in front of them. A forgotten corner on many levels.....

The demolition of Briggs and Duxbury's original workshop on Commercial Street in 1982. They also ran the furniture shop across the road behind it.
They moved into what used to be the Artisan's lodging house in Butts in the late 1930s when it became redundant as weaving jobs were lost in the mill closures.

Jim Pollard surveying the scene during the demolition of Bancroft Shed in 1979. He had put his life into this shed and now had to endure this. There was a very heavy personal price to pay for the demise of the weaving trade in Barlick but that is all forgotten now.....

The dirty secret of idyllic Scottish isles like Eigg is that they all have dumps where scrap metal ends up. It is not economic to collect and transfer it to the mainland.....

Craven Harriers hounds at Gisburn Park in 1982 when it was still a private residence....

Gisburn Auction Mart ring in 1981. It is still operating but the days when hundreds of dairy cattle were sold there has gone as has my participation in it.

In the 19th century when the board schools were built the prevailing theory about the spread of disease was the 'miasmic theory', diseases were spread by airborne noxious vapours so the new schools were protected by having efficient ventilation. That is what these structures on the roof of Gisburn Road school in 1979 were for. Since then they have been removed in the interests of fuel efficiency. We know now that diseases are spread by bacteria and viruses.....

Stop me and buy one! This used to be a common way of selling ice cream in simpler days....

Horace Thornton. Horace was my informant on tape sizing in the Lancashire Textile Project. I couldn't have found a better one. Such in depth knowledge of the complicated job of tape sizing is a forgotten corner now.

This old well on Ben Lane was a forgotten corner until it was rediscovered by accident. I wonder how many other examples there are in Barlick?

Standridge Farm on Folly Lane in 1977 and yes, the border collie is Fly my old cattle dog..... Can't remember who the other one is.....
Mrs Robinson used to carry the small amount of milk they hand milked from a few cows down to the milk Stand at the bottom of the lane each morning in a back kit and carry any hen grub they had ordered from Cramp Hoyle back up the hill. Long forgotten.....

This morning's forgotten corner is connected with the Zeppelin Field....
The 'marching Road' across the front of the podium points (to the left) directly at the Kaiserburg (LINK) which has long been associated with the Holy Roman Empire. The Nazis were aiming to link their movement with ancient Germanic legends.
The American occupation forces recognised this and as well as destroying the Nazi symbols at the Zeppelin Field, encourage the building of a large structure that blocked the direct line of site between the Field and the Kaiserburg. I suspect this is largely a forgotten corner now......



All that is left now of the podium and marching road.

Speaking of Nuremberg, my daughter is living in a village 33K south of Nuremberg.
She is even learning the German Language.
