Wendyf wrote: 16 Sep 2025, 17:02 We have had many moans about the NHS in the past, but at the moment we are certainly feeling the benefit. District nurses and palliative care nurses visiting regularly and now a delivery of useful equipment just 4 hours after a visit from the Occupational Therapist. The inflatable mattress should help protect against bed sores, the adjustable bed rest will help Col to sit up comfortably, a walking frame to help him get to the en suite bathroom and a frame around the raised toilet seat so he can use the toilet. Plus a commode if he can no longer get there. It's all go!
I get the feeling the local NHS/ Social Services is on some kind of bonus on how many walking frames and commodes they can hand out. Most folks houses havent got the space for them without major adjustment.

As October approaches (1oo days to christmas) i suppose it is covid and flu booking time

Wendy, thinking of you both.
Hopefully things will be a little bit easier now for Colin’s mobility and comfort.

Morning Wendy.... I'm pleased to hear you are getting good service. I hope they keep it up.
I understand your response to Kev's post but he's right, things like eating regularly and resting when you can will help. I think it's wonderful that Col has a guardian angel.... Please give him my best and take a virtual hug from me..... :good:

Covid was funny (peculiar) the milder the infection the tail off and secondary issues seemed to be reported as worse ( dont know how statistically significant those reports were)
The normal Hot Toddys against colds seem to help as does asthma inhalers and residual vaccinations. Covid is probably mutating to less kill more spread.

When Bob and I had Covid it was much milder than any cold we had had and the after effects were zero. Any one we know who has had it have all been the same. I think these days the media likes to talk about it but there are worse things around . Sadly the media only tells us the negatives of both the disease and the vaccine. Good news is not news these days

On another matter, I received my appointment today for my contrasted MRI scan, (year7), Wednesday 1st October 4pm Leeds General Infirmary. The schedule skipped year 6 and I think my last one will be at year 10.
I booked my train tickets for my jolly to Leeds,, £10.15 all day return, any train out and any train back. I have actually booked the 11.05 to Leeds but I can get any following train if I miss that one. If the M6 bus at 10.20 is on time it shouldn't be a problem. I should get into Leeds with time to spare for a bit of lunch then a nice walk up over the Headrow to LGI which is about 20 minutes steady away. I'll get a city bus if its not fine. A lot cheaper than driving and parking. Free buses at each end as required and you cant really beat just over a tenner for a return train journey to Leeds. I will have plenty of time for a look round Leeds centre as well.

Thanks Stanley. I'll see if I can remember the route through the hospital to where I need to be. Alternatively I can walk round the outer perimeter to get to the the other side if its fine.

I took the long route up to the hospital but still arrived early. I got a brew to pass half an hour and then decide to test my memory of how to get to the other side of the hospital which is a quicker route back to City Square and the station. I went about 3/4 of the way up to the Jubilee Wing and then realised I knew the rest of the way so turned back and made my way up to the second floor for the adult MRI suite. I knew I had a couple of forms to fill in but it was still only 2.30 and my appointment was at 4pm. No worries, I filled in my forms and they were passed on to the cannulation nurse. She scooped me up within five minutes and laced me up for the contrast. I was just waiting for someone else's scan to complete then I was called in. They shoved the contrast straight in and said they only needed 1) to 15 minutes of data, (it's previously been 20 minutes then a further 10 after the dye goes in). I asked and was granted 1940's swing in the headphones. after setting me up and shoving the periscope mask on I was only in the MRI for 12 minutes! The machine (Siemens) was exceptionally quiet, didn't detract at all from the music. I do wish though that as you are effectively immobilised and captive for the duration, (however long) that they didn't show Norwegian lakes and waterfalls on the monitor, calming yes but not ideal. Anyway all done by 3pm and I was back down at the station by 3.30. The monitor said the next direct train to Skipton was 15.46 so after a quick trip to the loo I was through the barriers and on the train which had just arrived. It actually set off late as it had to wait for an LNER train to clear the line. Sally picked me up from the station and we are home in good time for some tea. Results in a couple of weeks.

After some very stressful days coping with Col's rapidly deteriorating condition we are now being supported with 24 hour continuous care from the Pendleside Hospice at Home Team. Yesterday morning he was allocated a place in the hospice, but the paramedics who came to transport him felt that he was too ill to make the journey. Within a couple of hours the support at home was put in place and there are lovely, caring ladies who sit with Col for 8 hour shifts. The weight of responsibility has been taken off my shoulders and I have relaxed and slept for the first time in days. The palliative care and District nursing teams have made sure that Col has the drugs to make him sleep, relaxed and pain free. It seems strange to say it, but this is now a positive and pleasant experience. Col is dying comfortably in his own bed at home and i have some lovely, supportive ladies to talk to. Not long now judging by his breathing but all is OK.

I'm in tears reading this. I admit it. A brave post to make.
Not unexpected, and I've dreaded reading this thread for a while.
I don't do prayers - but I do thoughts - and you two are prominent in them.

Col died peacefully this morning at about 6.30am. David Hartley the funeral director has been and done his work and I am going about the business of letting everyone know. Such a relief its over. I can now relax for the weekend and batten down the hatches against the approaching storm!
