Have they got a bevelled edge? Used for holding a 'tool' at the correct angle for cutting?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Post by Stanley »

Gloria is nearest to the correct answer. They are the plates that the goniostat is placed on for use sharpening cutters. One is brass and the other is cast iron. They work by using fine lapping paste as an abrasive.
Kev, the correct angle is obtained by adjusting the goniostat itself. (The word goniostat comes from Greek roots: "gonio-" meaning "angle" (from gonia) and "-stat" meaning "to stand" or "to hold steady" (from stasis), essentially describing a device for holding something at precise angles, often used in gem cutting or X-ray diffraction to maintain specific orientations)
Now we need another object. Any offers?

Getting quite near Stanley, but not quite there. It has a title for measuring a specific thing of which the moon and stars are significant. It was widely used in World War Two.
