I lost my internet connection this morning while I was having second sleep and hadn't the faintest idea what to do. I rang Ian and he asked me a few questions and said what he thought it was, a failure of the connection between the router and the computer. I said I'd check that but he said he'd pop round after he had had his breakfast and have a furtle. I took the cable out from the router to the computer, reinstalled it and lo and behold I had a connection. I rang Ian, told him he was a genius and thanked him and now I go forwards full of hope! :biggrin2:

On an entirely separate matter, I needed to buy a compact flash card reader and found one £4 and £9.48 postage..... That looked a bit steep so I went further and found one in Laceby Lincolnshire for less than £4 with free delivery.
Could the fist one have been a scam? :laugh5:

It tells me that it is forbidden. So I tried my usual one and 75mb down and 27mb up. Perfectly adequate.

Works for me Stanley, must be the security on your browser.

Nowt wrong with it, it's a certificate protected link.

Anyway, matters not you have one that does the job.

I tried it and it showed my speed in an instant, not like all the others I've ever used which usually show a dial or something similar and you see it taking the reading. I notice it has `Netlix' at the bottom of the page! :scratchhead:

I had a repetition of the same connection fault yesterday. Cured the same way by re-installing the lead from the router to the box. I noticed that the clip on the lower plug wasn't engaging so I had a furtle in my boxes upstairs and found a new, unused cable. I have installed that one this morning. I think that may be the end of that problem!

I have the same issue, the cable that plugs into my docking station has a broken clip. Fortunately the laptop also uses WiFi so when the plug does slide out the WiFi takes over. I have another cable in a tin on my desk, I've just not got around to changing it.

Medical Matters is still there Cathy, but Stanley has confused us by creating a topic with the same name in the Local History forum to post an item from 2002.

I have a question.....
Suppose someone was accessing the web from a car parked outside your back gate..... Is there any way you could tell? And a supplemental.... would such activity pose any risk or expense for you?

You can log onto your router from a browser, usually 192.268.0.1 and check what is logged into it. The admin password will be on a label on the back.

It depends what they're doing. If it's something illegal it could be traced back to your router as the source. There is the chance someone could have got hold of your WiFi password but, unless you gave it to someone, the chances of a random person connecting are relatively slim.

I have Youfibre coming tomorrow to replace my broadband with full fibre to the premise. I had an email, from TalkTalk, a couple of weeks ago advising of a 10% price increase which would put the monthly payment at £33 for 60mbps fibre to the cabinet and just incoming calls to the landline.
A bit of a Google and I found the Youfibre deal, 200mbps full fibre to the premises and evening and weekend calls for £25. I get to keep my landline number and they pay the early contract leaving charge.
Youfibre were BRSK, until Virgin bought them and rebranded the company. Virgin also own O2, who my mobile contract is with, so there may be more benefits to come...
If anyone feels the urge to change provider there's a 'recommend a friend' scheme with a £100 payment to the friend, and referrer. Once I'm online with them I can download a code and share it with friends :good:

That sounds reasonable Kev. If I was younger and more energetic I'd be looking at Talktalk but I just keep paying the £40 a month.....

Kev, I've just had a peep at YouFibre's Trustpilot reviews and there seems to be a lot of poor reviews at the moment even though they get a headline 4.6 stars. Trustpilot

I had a read of the reviews before committing, there will always be some unsatisfied people, and even some malicious people, who make a point of writing reviews. What I have found is people tend to write reviews if something goes wrong, it's not as common for people to write positive reviews.

Trustpilot

The Youfibre engineers are here, their first task is to run the fibre from the pole to my house. The A56 in-between has made that job a bit more difficult for them.

45 minutes later, they made use of the pelican crossing to get the cable across the road :biggrin2:
a good bit of problem solving there.

It's all plugged in and will take around an hour to activate, I then have both services for two weeks (in case I change my mind).

Very polite and competent engineers, good service so far :good:
