I'll keep popping into the site while I am writing this morning. My present strategy is to ban all new members as soon as they appear! Just nabbed another one....

Are there actually HUMANS at the root of all this activity? Or is the spam from bots or automatic programs?
What do they get out of their activities?
( I cannot understand it)

No Maz, we are fighting automated systems designed to attack a site and cripple it by flooding it with rubbish. If we were4n't doing this the site would be unusable.

It is human driven at some point obviously, some individual or hacking groups idea of fun! The servers that are driving this are stealth enabled as the posts appear to come from many different parts of the globe. More likely a single server or small group but well hidden from the normal infrastructure of the internet.

We were up to 88 attacks when I went to bed last night. I can see from the logs that there have been around another 25 overnight.

If any member stumbles across any of the posts that are obviously spam DO NOT REPLY TO THEM OR CLICK ANY OF THE LINKS. Leave the post for Moderators or Admins to deal with.

Just for interest, I started the joining up procedure, and find the usual disguised letter code, to fool robots, and then you have to provide a verifiable email address to be confirmed before you can post. Have I missed something here, as I can't see how they can get through this procedure, and actually make a post?

The email verification was an automated system Tripps which is part of the problem. Spammers and hackers are well aware of the mechanisms in place and I suppose it's this challenge that is part of the attraction of beating the system. Doc is busy plugging the gaps and altering the registration procedure away from an automated system.

Monday is a busy day. Aquavit this morning, French this afternoon, and art tonight. I just hope I can stop coughing long enough to do the exercises. But the moist atmosphere of the pool should help my sinuses. It's been two weeks now since I started with this although we suspect we both caught another cold on the ferry last Monday, rather than this being the same cold

Walking is cancelled which is fine by me as I still have an awful cough and a thick head. Yesterday a walk in the fresh air made me feel worse than ever. Anyway I shall do a bit of knitting on my machine, and this afternoon we are off to the solicitors .

I am feeling guilty because instead of doing useful research or going in the shed I shall be indulging myself by reading the next two books in the Dark Materials trilogy... Someone's got to do it!
