WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?

I got some Dexter shin beef out of the freezer and casseroled it slowly on a bed of onions with the usual seasoning and a tomato sliced on top. It cooked down into a rich sauce and I had some with pasta shells for tea. Shin is so full of flavour and makes lovely gravy. Enough for two more small helpings today....

We had fish pie last night, tonight it is chops, roast potatoes & veg., no joint this weekend with the big meals looming.

Ditched the parsnips. Had a bowl of meat stew out of freezer for dinner and a tinned ham butty for tea. Not often I buy it but I just fancied it.

Christmas Day...Lunch time.
( slightly delayed due to a hitch with the frozen prawns which refuse to defrost on command...I am not resorting to the microwave as it will only toughen them...)
Never mind. Plenty of time. Might have a glass of wine and check them in half hour.

Have prepared a second meal to take to son's tonight. He had to work today and doesn't knock off until 6pm.
We are sleeping the night at his place, in our old bed actually ( that should be fun. The darn thing is only a standard double bed and now we have such a large one I think we will be knocking elbows and knees all night like the good old days). Maybe a little Baileys before bed will help us sleep...

Couldn't agree more Moh! I put that into practice yesterday and had a chip butty at dinnertime but made with parsnips, really good. I was going to have a ham butty for tea but I'd told Stewart that if he wanted to do me a 'wrap up' as he shut down for the holiday it would be welcome. He turned up at about 15:00 with two carrier bags full of all sorts and it included a pheasant and two steak puddings. I have a young friend who likes game so he gets an extra Xmas present and I didn't fancy freezing the steak puddings so I had them for tea with some peas.
Preparations for daughter Susan's Xmas beef butty are well in hand, a nice piece of Dexter rib has been cooking very slowly in foil since 22:00 last night and I've just put a loaf in to bake. I'm going to fry the remaining two parsnips when she comes and we'll have beef and parsnip butties on fresh home made bread. There will be a lot of people having more but none having better and we won't over-eat! Her husband Mick will be having school dinner Xmas dinner at the care home where he works.....

Xmas butty with daughter Susan was good, we both enjoyed it. Haven't even thought about food today.....

We had our Christmas Dinner last night after a visit to Mum in Leeds. She doesn't want to leave home at Xmas these days, can't cope with all the family visiting her and doesn't want us cooking food in her kitchen...so best plan is to take our first course (traditionally prawn cocktail) with us for lunch, take her some turkey (cooked Xmas Eve) to eat when she feels like it and then finish off making the dinner when we get home.
Son Craig did the stuffing in the style of Nigel Slater using chick peas instead of breadcrumbs with the sausagemeat...it was delicious. I did the roast potatoes & sprouts while Craig did parsnips & carrots glazed in honey. It was Col's job to do the chipolatas wrapped in bacon but he fell asleep after one drink and was left in front of the fire to snooze. Tastiest Xmas dinner ever, and all home grown veggies.

Sounds nice Wendy and I agree with your mother. Busy Xmas Days were all right when there were kids about. I had a bowl of soup and the remains of the butty that were too much for me on Xmas Day. Then half a beef butty followed by cheese on toast for tea.

Cheese and tomato croissants, eaten in our tin tent as we relax beside a lake after a fun bike ride. It has been a lovely day...warm, sunny and looks like we will soon be treated to a spectacular sunset.

After all the food on Xmas day and over indulgence after all the good intentions, but last night we had kippers on toast. Eileen

Had a lovely Christmas dinner at daughter's on Christmas Day, they had thought of going away but flights are so expensive - not sure what they were doing we ordered a small turkey for ourselves so that was cooked yesterday with all the usual trimmings. I did some braised red cabbage with a red onion, sugar, red wine vinegar and cinnammon stick, but I wasn't impressed. Today will be buttered sprouts, roast carrots, parsnips and potatoes.

I took two pork steaks out of the freezer (part of my wrap up) and casseroled them very slowly with trimmings to render down into a sauce. I had that with pasta shells for tea and there's plenty left over. At dinnertime I had the last of the rib of beef on a butty, just as good as it was on Xmas Day. Butcher's day today but all I will be getting is Jack's mince and paying for the wrap-up.

Slim pickings tonight. We have pulled the tin tent in to a tiny outback country town. Being Saturday, nothing is open. In fact, the place is so quiet they have an honesty box for paying the fees at the caravan park!
We've just got back from a bike ride around the town. Found nothing at at all open. Was at least hoping to buy a loaf of bread.
So...from our small store of food in the van, I have four crumpets, a tin of baked beans, some cheese and four potatoes ( plus butter, salt and pepper and milk). So I am thinking microwaved spud with cheese and bean filling. Might save the crumpets for breakfast.
I am never normally caught short of food. It is just that, for the first time ever, Febby suggested we buy a few meals this trip. Never fully trusting that ( because I thought I may not be well enough to go out), I cleverly stashed a few quickly grabbed items in a bag. So glad I did now.

You should have sent Febby out to find witchety grubs.....
I pinched some of Jack's dog food to bulk up the casserole and had it for dinner and tea with rice. One helping waiting in the fridge for today.

I squirm when you refer to the meat as 'Jacks dog food'.
I think you do it just to make me react.

Another thing entirely but I squirmed a bit yesterday when we stopped off for a quick bite in a seaside cafe ( which had seen better days). We sat at the back against the windows that overlooked the sea. There were such a lot of flies about...then we saw the maggots on the window ledges. Suddenly I couldn't eat another bite. Hope the kitchen was cleaner...
Left there much quicker than we had anticipated. Thought it would be a relaxing snack whilst watching all the little fishing boats coming back to harbour.
