Re: GOOD TV
Welcome news is that we get three new episodes of Lewis, one of my favourite programmes. However, ITV are going to spread them over six weeks as one hour episodes. How daft can they get? One of the nice things about programmes like this is that you can settle down to 2 hours of enjoyable TV. Now we will get 2X47 minutes after adverts have been taken out. Stupid!

Record it. You can then watch it, at your leisure, without adverts.Stanley wrote:Welcome news is that we get three new episodes of Lewis, one of my favourite programmes. I'd thought of that Kev but it means a pleasure deferred!

Chopped and changed a bit last night till I came across the Tank warfare programme. Quite horrifying yet riveting with amazing personal interviews with some who took part in the N. African battles of WWII. Over three years away fighting, and they got two weeks leave when they returned!

Re: GOOD TV
I'm looking forward to the second part David. One thing that always strikes me is how little mention there is of the fact that in the Krupps 88mm flak and a/tank gun, the Wehrmacht could knock any of our tanks out at long range. They had before 1939 and due to bad planning we had nothing but pop-guns till 1943 when the 17pounder came into service. Those lads were on a hiding to nothing! No wonder the Wehrmacht called our tanks 'Tommy Cookers'.

" how little mention there is of the fact "
It was well mentioned by Mark Urban in the programme. German range two miles - British range 800 yards. He showed the size of rounds too.

Re: GOOD TV
I saw that but the crucial importance wasn't flagged up. Beevor did a better job in 'D Day' and also flagged up how happy both US and British troops were when the 17pdr arrived. The American immediately installed it in some Shermans but unfortunately our tank turrets weren't big enough to take them. Every history you read shows how efficient the 88mm was right through the war. The funny thing is that it took the Germans a while to realise that their flak gun was a good anti-tank weapon. Even stranger, we had an equivalent, the 3.7 AA gun which would have been even better but we never adapted it. I think it was regarded as too large for field use. I wonder if any tests were ever done.....

Re: GOOD TV
I saw it when it was first broadcast Comrade and though it was based on later years than my spell in Germany it brought back many memories. To be precise, the Berlin Indepandent Brigade was never seen as part of the BAOR because the expectation when it was set up was that the Russians would eventually take Berlin back.

Re: GOOD TV
I recorded the sequel to 'Pillars of the Earth' last night. I hope it's as good as the original.
Watch out for the second part of Tankies and Speed Dreams tonight on BBC2.

Blandings on BBC 1 at 6.30. The Beeb can still do good stuff with classic pieces of work and the characters created by Woodehouse in this are brilliant. Nolic

A good early evening on the TV for me. Time Team at 5.25, Blandings at 6.30, Countryfile, 7.00 and Antiques Roadshow at 8.00. It's a good job it's Col's turn to cook!
Re: GOOD TV
I could not agree more on Lewis above. Silly idea. Aaaagh - I forgot the Pillars of the Earth sequel, will have to try and catch it on catch-up!
I wonder what the plans are for 'Endeavor' - same stable as Lewis and focussing on Morse as a young man? This had a 'pilot' Christmas/New year 2011/12 and I thought it was excellent and surprisingly dark. Since then, nothing.
Borgen, the Danish political drama, is back on BBC 4 and as good as last time. I'm also enjoying Ripper Street on BBC 1 Sunday night. Stargazing was good last week and Winterwatch starts tonight - Chris Packham is outstanding. Plus Miranda - hilarious! Those Midwives'll be back soon too.
At 30-odd pence a day or somesuch for the licence, what a steal.

Re: GOOD TV
Watched the Speed Dreams that I recorded. A good programme about glorious failure! Must watch out for a repeat of the film 'The Fastest Indian'....
Richard, it gets to be even more of a steal when you get to 75 and the licence is free....

Re: GOOD TV
Watched recorded Bladerunner again last night. I love to see locations in films I have been to and much of it was located in the Bradbury Building. I've been there and often wondered how they managed to get the interior shots with all the water on the floor....

Re: GOOD TV
I watched Time Team on C4 on Sunday and the house they were investigating belonged at one time to Charles Brandon, Earl of Suffolk under Henry VIII. Nice convergence with the Mantel novels I have been reading.

Recorded programme on BBC3 that I spotted late last night about DDay spies. Might be on iPlayer. Also caught a clip of a programme about the history of model railways that looked good. Nolic

Re: GOOD TV
I caught the tale end of the spy program, not sure that I I haven't seen it before on one of the doc channels on Sky. I was watching something I had already recorded. I will look out for it on iPlayer though, it will be worth another watch even if I have seen it.

Re: GOOD TV
I watched it, and gradually realised I had seen it before. Saw a good quirky little programme on Tuesday night called "Allotment Wars" . It's on iPlayer. . Think it was a one off, though there's a series in it somewhere. The accent of the pair of sisters from Bexley was interesting - great cockney, now almost dead in the East End.
