Bridge Chapel, Barnoldswick

Just downloaded the burials for Bridge Chapel. I have a note to say that Nancy Pickles, who was born on 11/09/1810, died on 06/08/1816 & was buried in the Dissenters Graveyard. I think that there must have been a note alongside her birth record. Is that where I would have seen it??

I don't know the answer to that Rossy but you've triggered a question of my own. When a record indicates that someone was buried in the 'Dissenter's' yard does this mean a special area at Gill?

I cant help with that one either Rossy, but I'm sure I have seen mention of an index to burials in the Dissenters graveyard at Gill. We might have a copy in the Earby Archives, I will check this morning.

I am typing up stuff relating to Barlick. I am sure that I will be telling my grandmother how to suck eggs, but when I went to see the old chapel on Walmsgate I noticed a plaque on the wall of adjacent buildings with the legend:-

“The old Baptist Chapel barn was registered in 1689, the oldest Baptist Chapel in Yorkshire and adjoining number 20 Walmsgate was an old thatched cottage which was converted into a chapel in 1694. The registers started in 1697 while the graveyard was first used in 1793. The present old chapel was erected in 1797.”

It sounds like the graveyard was adjacent to the chapel, although it doesn't clearly say as much. I wonder where the "plaquers" got their information.

Our copy seems to have gone missing, but there is "an index to the Dissenters burial ground, Barnoldswick" in Barlick library.

Have a look at Lewis, History of Baptist Church in the rare text section for the development of the chapel from a barn to what is there today. There was a small graveyard but over the years the stones have vanished and it's been made into the garden that is there now.
