Query re use of an old property as a 'schoolroom'

Post by Nixon »

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I hope I am posting in the correct place for my question. I apologise if not.

I live in a 1 bed terraced property which used to be a 2 bed with out house toilet. 1890s built I think.
I have been removing the wallpaper from my bathroom and revealed some huge lettering (whole width of wall) painted on the wall with stencil type characters. Not all the words are clear but I can make out:-

'GREAT MISSION ????????? Night ????????????? RDA School' The RDA is not 100% clear so could say something else.

I have taken photographs and enlarged on computer but some of the letters have faded. The type of lettering looks old to me. Pre 1950s.

I would appreciate it if anyone has any thoughts about the type of tiny schoolroom my bathroom (2nd bedroom) could have accommodated. I am very intrigued to possibly find out more information.

Kind Regards,
Nixon

Hi Stanley,
The house is situated just off the town centre of Barnoldswick.

St James, Robert, Alice, Bessie, Market or Garden Streets, maybe Commercial?

Hi Ian
Thanks for posting that suggestion. Any help or ideas are much appreciated.
I have not found any writing on the plaster of other rooms as yet and I have done the lounge area which is the biggest room, which makes me think it could possibly have been someone running a small night school from home.
I plan to visit the library early next week to see if I can find out anything,

Regards,
Nixon

It would be a lot easier if you could give a more precise location, (street maybe). I can understand if you do not wish to give an exact location but a street name might lead to more information rather than "just off the town centre". This broad location probably covers 500 or more properties.

Hi Ian and Wendyf,

Thank you very much for that link. I also felt the writing would be linked in some way to a local Mission. Someone involved in the Mission could have lived at my property. I am not far from Valley Gardens.

The property is on Alice Street.

Thanks to anyone giving thought to my post for information.

Regards,
Nixon
