Irony alert David....
It's a bit esoteric so I'll reveal all for you. On most lathes the accurately machined slide on the lathe bed which carry the saddle on which the cross slide and tool holder are mounted is on top of the bed. This is a copy of a lathe made by Birch of Manchester and they put the ways on the bed on the side instead of the top. More complicated and expensive to make but it meant that a rise and fall mechanism could be incorporated in the saddle. You can see the hand wheel for it at the bottom. This made it much easier and more accurate to locate the cutting point on the work-piece. Very important when doing complicated ornamental turning work.
Try this one....

Pioneering attempt at a redesigned clockface (they don't have the benefit of 12 unrepeated letters in 'Rochdale').

Or, insert for pressure gauge.

Obviously a scale of some sort from a machine with two pointers that indicated from 0-100 (outer scale) and 0 to 20000 (inner scale). It could have been used in many things but because it has no units I assume it is a counter, perhaps recording the number of strokes one of your steam engines made. But aren't these counters usually in small brass housings? Think you will have to give us a clue.

A pressure dial. The inner ring in millimeters of mercury and the outer in percentages. Well I tried.

Youve all got the idea and it's too esoteric to expect anyone to work out what it is, or rather what it's off. China was dead right about two pointers. It's the scale off the dial on a high speed beaming machine and indicates yards of yarn on the beam that is being wound. Try another wheel....

James Lumb & Sons of Elland, Governance Experts, best known as makers of steam engine feed controllers/governors, recorders and other accessories. Speed regulators, engine lubricators, steam fittings and compound safety valves. [From Google]

Did they make steam engines or just refurbish mill engines and manufacture various parts used on the engines?

So my guess: it is a cog from a speed regulator for a steam engine, rescued by Stanley and stored in his workshop.

Its the gearwheel from a Lumb speed indicator. Once a high class addition to steam engines. Different sizes to suit the gearing of the drive on individual engines.
Now try this one....

A round wheel for a square peg.

You are getting too technical for us. You are the only one who remembers these things!
Just what is the weight of the objects in that shed of yours? One morning you'll go outside and discover a huge sink hole where the shed previously stood.

I have a good object when this one has been guessed.

Sorry Stanley, I can only think of a facetious very blunt circular saw...

(Suspect it's really the thingy that goes round and works a lever to feed drips of oil into some part of an engine?)

The mechanism is the Wilby Regulator used by Lumbs on their governors. A clever bit of kit...

There you are! You did know it.... Quite right, it's one of the two ratchet wheels which are the clever bit in the Wilby Regulator used by Lumbs at Elland on the governor regulator. It must be an old one as they were usually chrome plated.
Now then, China said he had one for us....

I couldn't think of the word 'ratchet' when I posted none return wheel!

This mystery object is about 6" long. I hadn't seen one before but it isn't rare.

No idea actually, but it's the first item in this thread that I've actually fancied owning.
