Knotty Problem.

Inspired by Mick Toon’s recent carvings and also by Stanley’s threat to get back into the shed again. I found this piece of wood thrown out by a joiner. Once I had started work on it I realized why it had been thrown out. It had a knot in it.

To make it he took two suntanned boy scouts, rolled them out into narrow rods then threaded one through the other.

You've made wooden knots but can you make a wooden chain? It's knot that easy, you know!

There are some very good examples of wooden chains on Google images. For some reason they appear to a very popular subject. May be something to do with bondage but we'll not go into that on OG. Don't want to give the site a bad name. One of the main problems associated with wood carving is getting the correct type of wood in usable sizes. It doesn't grow on trees you know!

Bondage is what posh folk in the south of England ask for when they want something to wrap around a sprained ankle.

Hi Plaques, I have not ( or should that be Knot ) been on the site for a week or so, hence late reply. I like the knots you have carved, do you know what type of wood it is ? I have seen a few people at the carving club carve the chains, the chain ends up about twice as long as the bit of wood starts off as when you remove the center of each link the bit of wood grows in length. Its really clever when you see it done but just a case of doing each step at a time and being patient. Ther will be things on the net and probably You tube about it if you wanted to have a go

Thanks Mick, A piece of mahogany type wood. Don't know the exact species, as I said a joiners off cut. Not a favorite wood for carving with a tendency to split and splinter if you work it in the wrong direction. More of a draftsman than artist I try to do things that are a bit different to normal. This summer I've promised myself to finish off three old British motor bikes I've been neglecting. Some more junk to put in my pyramid when I go.
