Dead right. Even bigger, 2" BSP. Used for cleaning threads up on pipes and big fusible plugs. Next for shaving?

Dead right Bodge! I'm impressed, not many people would have known that. Always reckoned to be one of the best chucks around for accurate centreing, slow wear and a firm grip. This was Johnny Pickles chuck, it came with his big lathe. Try an easier one....

I can't deny you that one David. Not an old one for legal docs. Mary bought it for me to put an ex libris stamp in my books not realising that a book nut like me would see that as defacing the book!

I could mention that it's something of Alison's, but that probably won't help or hinder working out what it is.

Now then, Stanley... Although Alison possesses a sewing machine (In her wayward youth, she had a modest win on the pools or somesuch and invested the winnings in one. What any teenager would do, of course. It still serves her well.) But it's another item of equipment (in use almost daily) that's associated with the mystery object.

Looks a bit like a cable tie but cant figure what the screw bit is at the end

I've got a stubborn lid on the last jar of strawberry jam from last year, so could do with one of those thingamybobs, Ian. But this isn't one of them.

Cable tie analogy is on right lines.

Pennies dropped I think, Its and end support for a bike pump. The tie is wrapped round the frame tube, end passed through the slot and tightened by the worm thread screw. Similar function anyway.
