They didn't smell of garlic before!ell me the chief scent in the air is my pipe smoke....
Wendy will not see my toenails and I don't posses any Y fronts. Boxers and budgie smugglers yes, but nothing like Y fronts....

Wendy survived unscathed and was suitably impressed by the deep clean. I explained the lack of vacuuming by the fact that the cleaners come today and Jack and I decided to give them an easy first target!
Today I shall be watching them work, getting under the feet and basking in the attention! (all this clambering about to take nets and curtains down has made me ache!) Talked to Margaret in Perth and she has plenty of metal hooks. She is going to send me some. Put the curtains back up with two hooks less in each so they are OK.

Normal tasks like looking after myself and Jack but I might do a bit of light cleaning. I'm sorry to report that the cleaners seem to have revived my housekeeping genes....

Arrived in France last Thursday to find a faulty modem. Today we received a new one and have rejoined the world! Have I missed anything on here?

Plague, floods, Seven Horses of the Apocalypse... no, it's been pretty quiet really.

What I'm mainly doing now is finding that I'm Billy Nomates on Facebook - having bitten the bullet and succumbed to creating a FB profile.

(Got home from a meeting in time to watch the programme about Crossrail, but Tom & Alison are engrossed in a film...)

You missed a good programme....
Sue, main event was me having my cleaners in on Tuesday.
Main task today is starting on the edit and comment on a large article on the waterwheel at Quarry Bank written by a mate of mine who was in charge of the mill in the early years of refurbishment and conversion to a heritage attraction.

As it happens, it was as well that I wasn't sat on my backside watching TV; it gave me the chance to make more representations about the ludicrous Lancashire ban threatening Barlick Beach. Guess what I'll mainly be doing today...

Mainly occupied with road closure crisis, have just sent the further email to LCC:

Hi Phil.

Here is some further detail about the closures required for the events in Barnoldswick town centre in July, August and September:

The road closures are for the Donkey Rides and Town Crier Event as well as displacing the market.

The closure will be Albert Road from Ellis Street through to Newtown and the bottom section of Frank Street would be affected as well (because it will become a cul-de-sac when the closures are in place).

As the marquee goes in on Monday 28th and doesn’t come out until 8th/9th September, the closure dates required between 6am and 6pm are:

Thursday 31st July
Saturday 2nd August
Thursday 7th August
Saturday 9th August
Thursday 14th August
Saturday 16th August
Thursday 21st August
Saturday 23rd August
Thursday 28th August
Saturday 30th August
Thursday 4th September
Saturday 6th September
Sunday 7th September

The last three dates are for the commemoration activities with the lifeboat from Whitby coming to Barnoldswick.

As the sett paved section of Albert Road has a prohibition on vehicles from 10am until 4pm (which are the Beach operating hours) there haven’t been closures on that stretch for the normal operation of the Beach (when the donkeys aren’t there). However, it would be belt and braces to have a closure on that section, in addition to the above closures, whenever the Beach and subsequent exhibition is operating and during set up and takedown of the event ie Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm from Monday 28th July to Tuesday 9th September.

The closures and diversion would be signed to the required standard and stewarded as necessary.

Emergency access to properties on the closed section would be via back Albert Road and back Frank Street, if access was inhibited from the highways remaining open.

Thanks.

David

The laugh is of course that the road closures make no difference to pedestrians. Only the car owners who have lost the use of their legs!
Today is butcher's day and I shall spend all the rest of my time editing the waterwheel paper. I haven't finished the first read through yet....

As posted elsewhere, Pendle Council is making the orders regardless.

Hope to pick the legal notice from town hall on way back from Manchester.

Nothing in life is simple. While editing the waterwheel paper I had to look back at some old images and found that they were all saved as .psd which is a good archive format because it saves all the information. However, many image programmes won't open them as thumbnails so they don't get browsed. So I allowed myself to be diverted and started rendering the whole [large] file to .jpg. I'll be carrying on with that until it's completed.....

My mate Dot has been full of the Colne commemoration activities. It clashes with opening day of Barlick Beach though, which we brought forward to 2nd August. (We were intending opening the Beach on August 4th but, amongst other things, I thought the date was inappropriate.)

From today, and until 9th September, life will be consumed with activities on the Town Square - including of course Barnoldswick's WW1 commemorative event on 6th and 7th September; marquee crew due to arrive at 10am (a day earlier than the plan, but better all round).

With being a day ahead of schedule, we were very civilised and knocked off at tea time yesterday; hope the maxim 'never put off..." doesn't kick in!

What a brilliant place to live. We've spent many happy times there.

Sorry I'm a bit late with the response, we've just got back from 4 weeks away and I'm now trying to catch up with everything that's happened on the site. Not much internet access where we've been - not to mention not much mobile coverage or TV.

Worrying about Colin, who I have just dropped off at Airedale. He is having the first of his 3 monthly examinations to see if the tumour in his bladder has returned, it's done under a general anaesthetic so if they find anything it can be removed straight away. Fingers crossed.

Did abit of gardening yesterday after Bob's cousin went back to the south of France. She was with us for a week, a very hot week when we just couldn't do anything at all.

Wendy, just to let you know Wendy had her hip replacement yesterday. I won't get to see her for a few weeks. We are home fleetingly next week for a wedding and have the walls of the house tested for dryness. Where we stripped wallpaper and scratched the painrptwork has dried but the wall trapped between two tiled walls is still wet through. We are waiting to hear if the tiles will have to come off. I hope not as both rooms are fairly recently done but old enough to be unable to get replacement tiles.

All is good here in France. Tomatoes are coming as are the beans , courgettes, butternut squash, pumpkins, and corn and potatoes but the onions ,asparagus and cabbages are rubbish.
