Very true both of you. On every measure, from air pollution to wasting resources we are not fit to look after our world and as Ian says, if we don't mend our ways quickly, mother nature will solve the problem for us..... All the evidence points to eventual extinction..
See THIS for a report on Lady Jenkins' 'foot in open mouth' moment. She says she 'mis-spoke' and that might well be true but it betrays completely the wrong attitude and appalling ignorance. Another thing, look at the pic in the report, that is not the kitchen of a cook! All you can see is wine glasses! If she really meant that traditional cooking skills are not routinely passed on to children (male and female!) I'll agree with her. My mother made sure that we all had some cookery skills and they have served me well all my life.

This building at the old gasworks used to be the gas board showrooms and in the 1950s and 60s it was used by Barlick schools as the venue for cookery lessons. The gas board were being smart, they knew that the more people cooked, the more gas corkers they sold in the future. Remember all the cookery books the cooker manufacturers used to give away?

Must have been early to mid 50's Stanley. My uncle Bob (Robert Lambert) occupied the building after the workshop in the railway sidings burnt down. He had the whole of the site for the building and joinery business. His daughters ran the office in the front and the rooms immediately above were used for french polishing coffins as there was less dust down that end of the building. Joinery workshop was further back on the top floor with wood store and lorry pull in underneath. Cement and plaster were stored in there. Sand and aggregate pits were behind the Skipton Road wall and the large building inside the gate to the right was used for wagon and large tool and plant storage.

Strange how you remember little things, my uncle Bob had promotional joiners pencils made with the firms details on for giving out to customers. They were triangular (so they don't roll off the bench) and made with different coloured bodies. Company details were embossed in gold silver and black on the pencils:

Robert Lambert Ltd, Joiners, Builders and Funeral Directors, Tel: 2369 (Day): 2080 (Night)

I collected all the different coloured ones for my pencil case, don't know why I wanted all the different colours they were all just bog standard pencils. I did like the red and green ones though.

Could have been Ian, none of my kids had cookery lessons there....
Later at 12:30. My old Panasonic vacuum cleaner. It gave up the ghost with a shower of sparks from the motor. It is now on the tip thanks to my cleaners and Garry from Rainhall Road is delivering a new Hoover bagless for £90 any minute now. He says they are more robust and powerful than the Dyson. I trust him..... So, we move forward into a Hoover future!

Many moons ago our vacuum gave up the ghost and I knew my mum had a new Dyson, so I rang her and asked her what she thought of it.

Expecting some glowing referral, I was a bit taken back when she summed it up in one word : "Heavy"

I note that you were a supporting act for moon face.....
Had a vacuum round with the new machine. It picked up half the house! I got two thirds of a canister of muck and fluff. If it picks that much up every time I shall need new carpets! Remember, these carpets were cleaned with a wet carpet cleaner about 3 months ago....

Same with my Panasonic as well Stanley, problem with modern vacs is that they don't hold a lot compared to the old bagged varieties. Maybe they think that everyone has designer laminate floors or something. Just been round front and back room and the previously empty receptacle needs emptying again, mind you the filter jobby in the middle takes up 75% of the capacity before you start.

What attracted my attention this morning was my 8.00am dental appointment for a filling replacement. Fracture in the old one found on my checkup last week. It's not done bad, I think its been in there about 35 years. She whacked me with a full syringe of anaesthetic for the 15 minute procedure and I have just about got the feeling back in the right of my lower jaw now 5 hours later. Made sure it was totally painless. I cant remember ever having that much before, maybe folk are getting less tolerant to a little discomfort? It feels OK, job done and a different technique used than when it went in originally, modern dentistry is wonderful but still holds terrors for some. Thankfully I am no longer in that camp. £50 all in including initial checkup and a scale and polish on the NHS.

My Dyson is very heavy but it does a good job - thankfully I don't have to haul it upstairs.
I too had a green Robert Lambert pencil their Margaret gave me.
Say only a little but say it well.

I got mail this morning telling me that one of my young friends has had a 9lb 3Oz baby girl, both doing well. A beautiful new baby, about the only thing that gives me any confidence in the future! (Grandparents are fine as well!)
Despite the time of year, my parcel ordered on Wednesday arrived yesterday from Heckmondwyke.

9lb ...30 ounces???? How many ounces in a pound then, Stanley!?
I love my bag less vac, but also get a lot of mileage out of my rechargeable stick vac ( with a detachable dust buster) which is great for crumbs in the kitchen and around hubby's armchair. He can be a mucky pup! Sits there most nights throwing peanuts in his mouth and there is always some on the carpet... :laugh5:

Yes, our Dyson is heavy too and I agree with Stanley that they seem to be taking up more carpet than dust - I think Dyson must be in cahoots with the carpet manufacturers and retailers. Ear splitting noise too, to accompany the carpet destruction. Also the one we own doesn't have a control for varying the amount of suck, whereas my cheapo Argos equivalent in the garage does and I use it most of the time on about half suck!

We've got relatives visiting this afternoon and we've just seen on the news that the front has been blown off a house by a gas explosion during the night and it's on the housing estate where they live....eeek!! :surprised:

Image

(EDIT 15th Dec) Cannabis has been found in the house, which didn't surprise my relatives who live in the area.

If a new and modern bagless vacuum cleaner fills the container rapidly, it seems to me that the old one was not doing the job properly. Our last two were a "Vax" and a "Bissell", both were effective, but heavy and extremely noisy, and without a suitable cupboard to put them in lived in the passageway, they are now on standby in the garage. Their replacement last year was a Dyson Animal, cordless and lightweight it is also very quiet. It was not cheap, but Garlick's matched the lowest online price, it has a "docking Station" behind the spare room door for storage and re charging. It is also useful for cleaning out the car, no 60' extension required. To a cat, a vacuum cleaner is the "suck monster" and promotes rapid flight often upwards to avoid it, imagine this times eight!, In short it does "what it says on the tin". If any of you need a vac in a hurry, you are welcome to either of the other two for a small donation to our cats welfare fund.

Maz, my mistake was using a capital 'O' in ounce......
New Hoover is quiet and efficient, well pleased with it. Funny how electrical faults never come alone. Light over kitchen table is giving notice. I have called for help from a tall, intelligent agile young man.... I have little doubt I'll hear from him shortly. I'm too old to be standing on ladders working over my head....
