I used to run a lot and loved it...more long distance and hopeless at sprint.
These days I could walk all day, quite happily up hill and down dale...though the soft white sand on our local beach is a challenge on hot days.
But I am past running. I think I would need a week in traction if I attempted to run. My legs and knees would be fine, but my back wouldn't survive it.

No shame in that Maz and there is the bonus that the latest research tells us that overall, brisk walking is less damaging than running.

Family BBQ at ours today, and the weather was lovely at 27C.
I'm glad they have left now, though we had a nice lunch. I just find it a bit tedious when people allow their children to run riot through every room in our home ( drinks and food in hand). We were never allowed to do such things when young and were quite strict with our own kids when we took them to people's homes, but modern day parenting seems to mean letting them run wild and basically ignoring noise, mess and damage.

I'm with you. There's nothing wrong with expecting children to have good manners. I am guilty of taking children aside and telling them that we 'don't behave like that in my house, go outside'. The kids are often quite shocked that I tell them no - doesn't seem to happen these days. My husband gets embarrassed but I don't see why I should put up with it.

Saturday, 32 degrees at Kamloops, Sunday 16 degrees at Revelstoke, today 2 degrees falling to -2 and snowing at Lake Loiuse Alberta. Certainly a holiday of change!

Are we talking Centigrade or Fahrenheit Sue? I assume centigrade but F is generally used in North America... I still remember looking through the window of Ethel's apartment in NY an commenting on the cold. She said yes, it's 5 degrees. I was about to argue but then realised we were talking in F! That was 27 degrees of frost in America speak....
I shall be in the shed but instead of sleeping this afternoon I shall be at the last eye appointment at Burnley. (Until something else drops to pieces!)

Wendy, a fascinating subject which reminds me in many ways of definitions of courage. To my mind it took more courage to endure the the vilification these men were exposed to than endure the heat of battle. I always remember what a WW1 Veteran said to me when he was justifying his dislike of Remembrance Day 'celebrations'. He said that much of the sentiment was sham, his comrades didn't 'give' their lives, they had them taken from them by force in horrible ways. I have never forgotten what he said.....
Sue, sorry to hear the bad news about Metrication in Canada. I have never been a fan. You could divide the old Pound (240 pennies) by a third and get 6/8. If something was £18 a ton you knew automatically it was 18/- a cwt. There were lovely synergies between other measures as well which vanished when we went metric. My head still works in Imperial and it's too late to change me!

I have spent the last two days in the company of a distant cousin James Michael Hartley of Nelson British Columbia, formerly of nelson Lancashire. We are related though our Berry families, our Whittaker families, possibly ourHarltleys and our Berry families. But more important what a lovely person. Meanwhile I have had an email through ancestry.com Informing me of another distant cousin in Calgary. Descended from yet another son of martha Edmundson and John Widdup, formerly of Rochdale 1785, and latterly of Barlick. It's a small world, or seems to be when you are in Canada.

I'm so pleased that you are having such a great holiday Sue. I don't need to tell you to collect as much information as you can. All too quickly the people with the stories are no longer with us and the stories are lost for ever with them.

So true Liz! That was the main thing that drove me to invest so much time and effort into the Lancashire Textile Project and the reason why it's unique. All those memories collected in the 1970s from people who are all dead now.... A true wasting resource!
I remember once telling a textile museum curator that his greatest asset was the old workers who came in and explained the processes to the visitors. Once they were dead the resource ended with them and they should gather and preserve the information while they were still with us. That's also the reason why I write so much about steam engines and boilers. There are very few people left who have actually done the job....

This is where went yesterday. In the evening we went the visitors centre for a talk on bear management. Very interesting.

Isn't it funny how we humans have a soft spot for bears even though they can be so dangerous. They were endowed with mystical qualities by our distant ancestors and in some cases even worshipped. Mind you, I wouldn't like to have to face one in the woods!
I'll be in the shed but at the back of my mind is the nagging thought I should be doing some writing for the BET.....

Off to Calgary today to fly to San Francisco very early in the morning. Up at 4.30 am, that Is 3.30 San Francisco time. Ouch !

My cousin has just contacted me to say that yet another relative would like to meet us on Monday or Tuesday!. That's 4 relatives seen, one grave and one new contact all in one holiday

I think you'll enjoy SF Sue. If the Buena Vista bar is still on the go they do a wonderful Irish coffee.... And tea at the Top of the Mark used to be good.... and with a good view if the fog isn't down.... Lovely town.

Today so far we have mainly been accompanying our Jack in his house hunting quest. We have looked at three today and he has put an offer in on a very nicely presented property in Earby. It was certainly the best of the three we looked at and it has been very nicely finished and presented and a very good price. Would not need very much doing at it at all. He will find out on Monday if his offer has been accepted. It's a good house and not much work for dad to do by the looks.
