PBS showed back to back episodes of the finest series ever made for TV. Jeremy Isaacs' 1973 World At War. Apart from University Challenge, that's what I watched all night. I never tire of it....

I made a mistake, it was the UKTV channel 'Yesterday'. Same thing last night, wall to wall World at War. I looked at what was on the other channels and settled for Laurence Olivier..... Part of last night was the discontent in 1942 and the furore over the Beveridge Report. Very perceptive reporting and quite apposite to today. Also, the Bevin Boys and the strike at Betteshanger Colliery.... (LINK)

Watched the last episodes of World at War. Like Plaques and his book on European wars, I have reminded myself of exactly what is at stake in the referendum on the EU.

I started to watch the Sherlock Holmes film on BBC1 but gave up after a while, sorry, but it's far too clever and convoluted for me. I like my stories simple and direct....

We have elected to record Beowulf and watched War and Peace. Quite looking forward to "Jericho" on Thursday, the story of the shanty town at Batty Green when building Ribblehead and Bleara.

I agree Comrade about War and Peace and Jericho-as long as people remember it is fiction and only loosely based on the Ribblehead viaduct. Nolic

I think 'loose' is being kind Colin! I doubt if the shanties in Jericho were anywhere near as neat and tidy as the ones they were building out of new sawn timber with roofing felt to waterproof them!

I watched the first episode of Night Manager on BBC1 last night. Excellent and a very faithful adaptation of John le Carres book. I shall not miss future episodes.....

Looking forward to the last episode of Shetland tonight. I enjoyed Vera as well though that was ruined by adverts ...(except for the Skoda ad with the pug in the car which makes me smile time after time).
What with Happy Valley and The Night Manager I haven't watched as much TV for ages!

We have Shetland on series record but are following The Night Manager also, Happy Valley is a must for me, James Norton is well nasty in that one. He's all over the drama's recently as very diverse characters. War and Peace and just started in a new series of Grantchester, (never watched that one myself)

I didn't fancy War & Peace and though we are recording Grantchester it doesn't really appeal I don't know why, perhaps I prefer James Norton as a villain. Too many of these public school boys filling our screens at the moment!

Grantchester was marked 'no entry' for most of last year, in order to repair the bridge. Very handy I'd guess, for filming the latest series.

There's a new channel on 306 - two down from Romford dogs (401) - called TalkingPics TV. They have old films 1950's stuff in Black and white. 'I'm all right Jack' has just been on. Nice simple films where you can understand the plot, and see the gags coming a mile away. Suits me. Must dash - it's Dick Barton now.

PS. Try 'Raised by Wolves'. Didn't think it was my kind of thing, but it's quite clever.

Wendy, I watched the last episode of Shetland.... good finish! Must look at series 2, it's on Iplayer.
David, I agree about some of the old B&W films, I tried to watch that new series 'Murder' the other night and I'll be buggered if I could understand what was going on. I want entertainment on the box, not challenge!

Nice one David.... My Dad always said that Post War Credits was the biggest con' trick ever but I reckon it is the canard about the Playing Fields of Eton and the Myth of the 'Natural Ruling Class'.

It may be just me but apart from one or two decent programmes the major channels aren't attracting me with their endless repetitions of Flog it and Bargain hunt. However, help is at hand, I've been watching a lot or PBS and UKTV's Yesterday and drama channels which are on Freesat. At the moment the Drama channel from 16:00 to 18:00 is repeats of Pie in the Sky and Lovejoy and I find I can watch them with no pain. Last night Drama screened the first part of the first series of Shetland and will no doubt go on to the subsequent series. I missed series 1 and 2 and so 21:00 on drama is a fixed point for me on Wednesday nights. I can fill up with anything I miss on the catch up function of the Freesat box.
