Click to enlarge. If you can look beyond the Beautiful Shireen Shah as she was then, just her left you'll see a cross nailed to the bottom of the Hawthorn tree in Hey Farm garden. This was the final resting place for all the dead pets.... (The tree liked it, it was very healthy!)

How good and settled the weather is for late April. True we are not out of the heating season yet but there are hopeful signs. The fallibility of the weather forecast at local level was demonstrated this morning by the fact that the severe frost they forecast yesterday never happened. The light frost at 4AM had gone by 6AM when we went out. This and better will do.....

Lovely fire......
How rewarding a good book is.... Spent the last two days sitting very quietly reading le Carre, 'Absolute Friends'. This is a very quiet house having no front street and a dead end back. All I could hear was the tinnitus in my ears..... (Years of heavy guns, riveting and diesels....)

All you can hear at ours is bird life and frogs during the day, and waves crashing on the beach at night if the wind is blowing our way.
(Except for the usual lawn mowers/leaf blowers, as most folk around us keep their gardens pretty tidy)

Not quite in the same league but my dads Border Collie once made it home unattended from Long Preston to Barlick. Dad was working on a barn conversion up in Long Preston, our collie Lassie went everywhere with him including work and rode on the back of the wagon to jobs. Dad had been working on the barn for a few weeks and Lassie used to pal up with the farm collie next door to where they were were working. She would always come back at knocking off time when dad whistled.

One Friday when they were done for the week, dad whistled for Lassie but she didn't appear, they hung back for a bit while dad went back up to the farm but she was nowhere to be seen. He left her there with a view to going back up next day to find her. The following dinnertime he was making his way up to get the Skipton bus by the Conservative Club. When he got the other side of the level crossing he saw a bloke he knew with Lassie on a length of bailing band. "I were just fetchin her down to thee Johnny" he said, "I have just catched her getting off the Skipton bus".

Dad went to see the bus driver who said that he saw Lassie get off the bus from Long Preston when is stopped at Skipton Bus Station. He said she walked once round the bus station looking at all the options then just hopped on his green Laycocks bus and laid down under the front seat. She got off when he stopped at the Con Club.

Dad had a word with the driver of the Settle - Skipton bus the following week, he said that on Saturday morning he saw her waiting with two other passengers that got on in Long Preston and just hopped on as they were paying. She went all the way and then just got off with everyone else. She had never been on either bus before. We reckoned that she figured the bus was going the same way as the wagon she was used to traveling on. Never been to Skipton Bus station before but jumped on the one that she would probably have seen in Barlick. Intelligent breed.

Work on Barnoldswick's CCTV system, which Pendle Council is carrying out prior to the town council taking over running the scheme. (Rather them than me up that pole!)

By gum, that's high up - are you going to spy on Colne, Barrowford and Gisburn as well as Barlick?

It covers a school, triple junction with mini roundabout, another T Junction, two zebra crossings, two arterial routes into town and the town green and one of the town care homes. Not bad from one camera, a lot of bang for the buck as they say.

An excellent idea. There will be the knockers of course, but if you are not doing owt wrong it will become part of the landscape in no time. Bad luck to the naturalists who want to lay on their back decks and get their bums brown...

The CCTV infrastructure has been part of the town landscape for a good number of years Maz. The work being undertaken at the moment is to transfer the operation of the system to the Town Council from the current Borough Council operators who can no longer afford to run it due to government imposed budget cuts.

The pole near the mini-roundabout is so high as it's a relay for the signals coming from the one at Victory Park. The system needs line of sight between adjacent poles to transmit the pictures; this one needs to be able to see over the buildings to the next camera.

All the pictures from the cameras is recorded and these recordings are checked if an incident takes place. The system is governed by various protocols which I think prevent it being publicly accessible.

Mrs Tiz and me are naturalists. Have we been going about it the wrong way? We usually wear thermal underwear, anoraks, scarves, gloves, waterproof trousers, boots and sometimes a safety helmet if we are below cliffs. Mind you, we've occasionally disturbed naturists on a secluded beach.

I noticed the other day that the badly sunken grate on Commercial Street I reported on the LCC site has been repaired. It was marked up a few days after I reported it and repaired about seven days later.

Tizzy, Mr Feb and I were enjoying being "empty-nesters" and were stretched out in the sun catching some rays one day when a helicopter seemed to be doing a rather low grid pattern round about.
It was the Near Maps helicopter, and when we checked our location some time later we could see two sets of bare legs just disappearing as we rolled at considerable speed beneath the covered pergola!
We never mentioned it to anyone, or it would have come back to haunt us, I'm sure. Our kids would have got mileage out of it somehow...

I remember once, while I was doing some record shots of High Mill at Addingham, being surprised when a naked woman sprang up from the floor of the balcony and retreated at a considerable rate of knots through the French window. The funny thing was that if she'd stayed where she was she would have been totally invisible.
