The wonderful Victoria Wood has died from cancer, aged only 62. A sad day.

I remember first seeing her in Dinnerladies. (pioneering days for English female comediennes)
Victoria was multi-talented and gave us lots of laughs. Died too young.

Prince (Prince Rodgers Nelson) has died aged 57 at his home in Minneapolis, R.I.P.

Our Dan's favourite musician, went to see him at the MEN arena, an astounding musician and performer.

What is happening? I think it very sad that Prince died alone. I enjoyed his music and his individuality.
They say that to see him on stage was like having a religious experience.

Dont recall a big fuss when proper musical royalty passed away, King Oliver, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, and of course Count Basie, its a pity some of the youngsters werent raised by a father who loved the jazz, swing era

I don't understand your comment there Bodge all those greats were dead long before this thread started. I'm sure that if One Guy had been running in the 60's 70's and 80's they would have got a mention.

You can't count me in your last sentence either, all my kids had everything from 20's and 30'sjaz and blues, 40's swing, 50's R&B, Rock and Roll and 60's beat played to them throughout their upbringing. They are just as likely to sing along to Ella Fitzgerald or Big Bill Broonzy as Elvis, Buddy or Beyonce.

It also happens in mainline news journalism too, although less so now after so many journalists were embarrassed by their mistakes.

Ian, I think Bodger was making a general comment rather than criticising OG. People didn't used to make so much fuss. But it's part of the general trend towards more sentimentalism.

I didn't think he was criticising OG Tiz. The performers he mentions would have been reported in the newspapers at the time and probably mentioned on the odd radio station, those newspapers in turn would have been wrapping up fish and chips the day after the obituaries. News is instant and global nowadays so will inform and impact a lot more people who in turn have the mechanism to publicly comment. Literally minutes after Prince's death had hit the internet his Wikipedia page had been updated with the news. It isn't really a case of making a fuss it's unavoidable.

My dinosaur heritage coming out, i have very little respect for musicians who need a boffin in electronics to help them make money, i still prefer pubs, clubs etc. that have live music , once you amplify the background noise increases and you finish up listening to music that you could hear better at home on a player

Sadly - looks like it's true this time. RIP.

In 1999, the Daily Telegraph wrongly reported Swarbrick's passing and published an obituary after he was spotted going into hospital. He would later print off copies, sign them and take them to gigs to sell to fans.
He spoke to BBC Radio 4 about the mistake in February, saying he was "happy" about what was written about him, "because far from damaging my career, it had enhanced it somewhat".
