The steps are in what's now the garden of a house on Chapel Square off Red Lion Street in Earby - and next to the beck.

Whilst spending time yesterday discussing the floods with affected residents and those who witnessed what happened, the householder pointed out the steps and said they were originally used for baptisms when the chapel was there.

I don't know if this was actually the case; there's still a bit of mystery in my mind about it.

Well, my post above, in response to what I now know is the baptism stream, is another example of where the earlier posts were'nt showing when I sent mine, and it didn't let me know other had posted in the meantime.

Plaques photo is the winch on the gable end of the former Cooperative branch building on Manchester Road, now the Strategy club. Used to lift goods up to the second floor or maybe into the cellar although there is no evidence to the latter on the pavement.

I should have put a blocker on certain people answering this item. Of course PanBiker is absolutely right but I was hoping for more imaginative answers like hanging Barlick witches or part of the gibbet for coin clipping. Actually I only put it on because I thought it was a good photo. Don't all shout at once!!

Not to spoil it, I think I may have made a mistake. It's actually the pulley for starting the gyroscope that makes the earth rotate.

Almost certainly cast at Ouzledale Mill when it was a foundry....

I like the little hole through the building so that you can thread the rope through without using ladders. Also it stops the Barlicker's from nicking the rope when its not being used. Not sure about the gyroscope theory, wouldn't you have to stand outside the Earth's gravity to get the desired pull? Over to you Tizer.

It's easy. Terry Pratchett would have told you that the wizard's of Unseen University who have Earth spinning inside their glass globe in the High Energy Magic Building just have to tug on the string hanging out of the globe.

Works on the deck chair principle but other than that...

It looks like some kind of light duty manual jacking device, can you give us some idea of scale Tiz?

You can see it's small by the size of the screws, and it's about 3 to 4 inches across. I don't have the object to measure exactly.

I though it looked quite small, its well made from wood and looks very well used, I wonder if its for something on a desktop?

Supporting glassware in a laboratory? I'm sure I've seen these in the lab being used somewhere.

None of those and I think it's made of brass. I'm off to Cornwall for a week tomorrow morning but don't worry, I've made arrangements so that you'll learn whether you've proposed a correct answer while I'm away!
