What grabbed me, the rape of the 14 year old girl on her way to school. I hope they catch the two warped and evil white men who did it. (LINK)
Mission Rosetta is to go out in a blaze of glory and information rather than a trip into infinity. (LINK) In real time as I write, images are arriving back as it approaches the comet and they are described as 'stunning'.
By the way. Disregarding the delay due to distance, the data transmission rate is less than 40kps, equivalent roughly to the old dial-up speed we had to endure for so long.... God, do you remember sitting there waiting and watching the blue blocks? And the repeated calls to get through. I couldn't have imagined then what 38Mbps could be like!

Only the Daily Mail as far as I can see has reported a scaffolder who said he saw the girl sitting on a garden wall using a mobile phone for about an hour, after the event. The time of the offence is odd too. We will see.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Worse case here Stanley. Two 11 year old boys have just had their first court appearance for the rape of a 6 year old girl at their school. Not once, but on 2 separate occasions, before she was brave enough to tell her parents. Appalling.Stanley wrote: What grabbed me, the rape of the 14 year old girl on her way to school. And then one of the boys was released from custody after the hearing so that he could go on holiday with his parents!!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Back to a more pleasant subject...
Re-surfacing of Greenberfield Lane between the sewage works and Coates Lane was completed yesterday.
The work has been funded from a flood repair budget set up following all the damage last December.
After a bit of argy-bargy, I managed to get the lane into the programme (after all, it was under water for several weeks).
One of my aims when I stood for the county council again in 2013 was to get the little lanes (Ghyll, Brogden, Greenberfield) up to a decent standard. As they are all lightly trafficked, they never get very high priority in repair programmes; it's necessary to find 'special circumstances'... With Brogden Lane, that was the second Ride with Brad event; Ghyll Lane I got done as a 'local priority scheme' and Greenberfield from flooding. As some of the lane still needs work doing, I'm not getting the champagne out yet though!
Here's a montage from the dossier I put together in February in the fight to get the lane repaired.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Excellent, but it stands a good chance now of increasing the "rat run" traffic that illegally use the lane sometimes at stupid speed.
Would it not be possible to put a removable steel bollard in the centre of the lane just past the last property by the sewage works? This would stop the through traffic problem and force drivers to abide by the signage. It would have the advantage of being a long reverse for those bending the rules from the locks end, they would probably only do it once! This would not affect access by legal cycle and horse traffic and would be a lot safer for walkers.

I'm impressed Ian, that was a very un Corbyn like rant. We'll make a centrist of you yet
Totally in agreement with your stance on Greenberfield lane. It is a ratrun used by brainless individuals usually in large SUVs.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I think Jeremy would probably agree with me as well. The lane should be a haven for walkers, cyclists and horse riders with occasional usage by farm traffic from the farm as far as Broad Ing. As it is there is no deterrent other than the signage which obviously makes no difference to those that choose to ignore it. A single bollard in the right place will sort that.
I have posted further over in FB land on this and suggested that farm traffic that currently uses the lane to access the fields at the other side of Stock Beck would only need a single crossing point over the beck and they could access everything on the Greenberfield Farm side without having to use the full length of the lane which I think is the case now which would be a negative for installing a bollard.
If you contrast this with the canal towpath which is designated as an integral part of the National Cycling Network you find an obstacle in your way, either a swing gate or a metal pinch gate about every half mile or so. Both of these are easy for walkers but a nuisance if you are on a bike, particularly the pinch gates as the handlebars on a mountain or ATB bike wont fit through without turning them sideways. I think the gates are designed to keep both motor transport and horses off, the latter of course what the towpaths were originally designed for, funny old world really, not a lot of joined up thinking.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Living on a narrow single track lane we too have that problem of resurfacing turning it into a race track. We'd rather have some holes. I think it would be a good idea if all single track lanes had a blanket 30mph speed limit. Mind you, there'd have to be speed cameras as well or it wouldn't have the desired effect.

Or even 20mph, in the real world that doesn't cost much in time. I could never understand why, when 20mph was brought in for some back streets, the whole of the town wasn't made 20mph. It would save a fortune in signage and the time penalty is minuscule over such short distances.

Manchester road is 20 MPH from just above The Greyhound, Doesn't stop headcases coming down there at 40+ or sometimes 50+. They put 'Slow' on the road just before the bend onto Church St, if they were obeying the 20MPH speed limit under no stretch of the imagination, would they need to slow. (Its not that bad taking it at 30)......

My friend hid her jewellery in one of her boots when she went on holiday. She came back with malaria and was really sick for ages so didn't think much about it. About 4 years later she was delighted to be reunited with it when she was clearing out her wardrobe.

Quote via Hello magazine
Interesting - what was routine about 50 - 60 years ago is now a "silent class marker"
"It's a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts," William Hanson told Harper's Bazaar UK. "Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.
"Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge."
The tradition can be traced back through the royal family, with both Princes William and Harry regularly seen wearing shorts until they were deemed old enough to progress to full-length trousers.
"The usual custom is that a boy graduates to trousers around eight-years-old," William added.
"This is, historically, perhaps due to the practice of 'breeching', which dates back to the sixteenth century. A newborn boy would be dressed in a gown for their first year or two (these gowns have survived as the modern christening robe) and then he was 'breeched' and wore articles of clothing that more resembled shorts or trousers than dresses."

Many of you will recall that photo of Stanley cleaning out a boiler where only his feet can be seen sticking out of the opening. I was reminded of it when we received this photo from Mrs Tiz's niece today. It shows her latest young child lending a hand with the domestic duties. (And no, he's not allowed to play with the tumble drier without parental supervision!)
