HOUSEHOLD TIPS NOT FOUND IN WOMAN'S WEEKLY
Re: HOUSEHOLD TIPS NOT FOUND IN WOMAN'S WEEKLY
It amazed me when I first tried it and changed the way I deal with eating a sour pineapple.
BTW, my Malaysian wife was Chinese but isn't my current good lady.

It is an advantage as you get older to clearly label sections of the house in case your memory fails you.....

Don't live too long. Your mates die and there is more chance of burying your kids..... Don't worry, I'm not getting depressed, it's just that every now and then reality strikes home.

It's harder to sharpen a knife or tool if someone has made a mess of a previous sharpening. Don't despair, just keep going until it is to your satisfaction. This applies to so many things around the house, once you have got the basics right maintenance is easier.

Agree Liz. I am much more comfortable with a low level of heat....
Always wear a face mask if you are doing more grinding than usual. I forgot that and all the grinding I have been doing over the last few days has had an effect on my chest. Not serious but I can feel it. I shall desist!!

Re: HOUSEHOLD TIPS NOT FOUND IN WOMAN'S WEEKLY
Still coughing grinding dust up, no fool like an old fool! Not generally realised is the danger to health from dust when you are emptying the vacuum cleaner. Take care to do it where you can avoid the worst of it. Be particularly careful if you are using abrasives to remove old paint which could have lead in it. I once had 36 hours hallucinating from that one! Another little known danger is fine sawdust from some African hardwoods and especially from modern MDF board which contains Formaldehyde.

I often wonder what the effect of 'air fresheners' is. I suspect that they are not good for humans in the long run. I prefer the scent of Dettol or bleach! (And even they have have their dangers....)

I am always a bit suspicious too. I'd rather just open the windows and let the breeze blow in. Probably a bit easier over here.

I often wonder what effects a lot of these sprays have on animals when sprayed near them - perfumes, hairspray, flyspray etc - the poor animals then have to lick of off their fur. I never spray around my cat.
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.

At Bancroft the advent of disposable paper knickers was a disaster! The old sewage pipes couldn't cope. Happy days......

I believe the Greek situation is all our doing in the shape of Victorian British Army plumbing when we thought we knew better than them.

I've been looking into paradichlorobenzene this morning and learning how dangerous it is. So today's tip is that if something is powerful enough to kill nasties it could well be bad for you! (It's the active ingredient in moth balls and some other insecticides....)

That's what makes me so averse to insect killers and air fresheners! Can anyone remember the yellow blocks of plastic made by ICI? They were discontinued after it was discovered that they were poisonous to humans as well. A fly-swatter is totally safe!

And if you don't use them all, your kids can inherit them. We're still using up things like rolls of kitchen paper from my in-law's house and bars of soap from my dad's!

Re: HOUSEHOLD TIPS NOT FOUND IN WOMAN'S WEEKLY
Keeping stocks of food as a precaution against possible hard times is as old as humanity itself. I suppose it was even more important during WW2 when there were occasional shortages of essentials. I was brought up with stocks of non-perishable items like canned food and toilet rolls and have never lost the habit. I see people so often, particularly at weekend when the fast food outlets are closed, having to shop for breakfast or other meals. And then there are the home delivery services. I'm afraid it wouldn't do for me. Funnily enough, I have very little 'fresh food' in the fridge. I often boggle when I see programmes like 'Eat well for less' when they open the fridge door and it is crammed to the gunnels! Of course I am lucky, I cater just for me and Jack so it's easy to keep track and not waste food. So as far as I am concerned, a well stocked house is a happy house!
