The room is 11.5 m by 4 m and as you can see it is mainly roof :laugh5: tge photo is taken looking down into the room from the stairs Bob built some years ago. We had tge windows put in too. As I have said before it was tge grain store. As you will see no one plasters here, its all straight on the plaster board

Makes me feel tired just to read the account....
I have just put the weekly shop away. I did an hour in the shed.

Image

I have started on the crankshaft for the No. 9 castings that are on their way and might be delivered today. Mrs McMaster came out to play, I swapped the chuck for the big 3 jaw and got set up and started. I did a quick swarf pickup before I went to the Co-op. It's a start....

My brother spent many years going to Ireland for two weeks a year just carry out maintenance on his bungalow. He sold it a couple of years ago and maintenance was all he was doing with it.

We're off to Nidd Hall at Killinghall, just outside Harrogate, for the weekend. There's a David Bowie tribute act one evening and a Freddie Mercury tribute on another. We may go to Teesside on Sunday afternoon to watch youngest offspring play basketball.

Ah well we have a rule, decorating in the autumn and early Spring visit ie November and late February. Gardening whenever but veggies planted in May. The garden is basically perennials and flowering shrubs now. The months in the summer are just to enjoy, though we have to garden in June because of the high growth rate, but I see that as enjoyment and not a chore. This is the last big renovation job. We have done very room now in the manner that we planned 18 years ago . The kitchen needs decorating but its not a major project.

Enjoy the tribute bands, I am not a Bowie fan but I do love Queen

He definitely did. Our philosophy is, if you buy a second home that is what it is, a home. So yes it needs maintenance but you don’t do maintenance all the time at home. You do other things, go places, have visitors, see friends and just enjoy where you live. We never think of our visits as a holiday, except in the summer. We think of it as moving to a different environment, one with better weather, and carry on living doing what has to be done and doing just what we want to do.

I shall be in the shed pursuing my crankshaft. Then a busy day (It's already started in that I am doing a load of washing now) because I have to roast my chicken and cook veggies.... Rain is forecast so I shan't even be thinking about walking and sitting!
I've started the day well, it's 05:20 and I have done a load of washing and prepared the chicken for roasting. It's in the small oven and will cook slowly for five hours.....

Morning

We are on the home strait you may say now. Today will be a finishing day. I will be finishing renovating the old furniture by sanding and varnishing the wooden table top that goes across the two cupboards, Bob will be finishing the white emulsion painting and I will be finishing the washing which is largely our bath towels and painting and decorating gear when we HAVE finished. This afternoon will be a quick whizz through with the vacuum upstairs and clean the bathroom. Tomorrow will be the same downstairs plus cleaning the kitchen. We shall pack though there isn’t much to take home. We leave tomorrow after lunch, staying overnight in St Malo before the ferry early on Monday morning.

Roland looked good yesterday. He does well for 92 coming up 93. He is a bit forgetful but generally we can have a good conversation a few jokes and a laugh with him. It always strikes me how smart and personally well kept he looks. I am afraid both my Mum and Dad lost that , not bothering too much with what they wore or how they looked. There is a wedding photo on the table of him and his wife Chantal ( a lovely sweet lady who sadly died some years ago) . Having married in the mid 1950s he looks a bit like a very smart teddy boy with a wonderful quiff of hair. He still has the same thick head of hair combed bed in much the same way. The photo makes me smile, a lovely blast from the past and a reminder of what a lovely couple they were. We will never forget the help and support they gave us in our early years here

A dryish cloudy cool day is forecast with a couple of showery periods but it won’t affect our plans. Have a good day all

That was a nice post.... You're right about keeping standards of personal care up. I am not the best in the world at that because of starting the day in the shed. Not the best place for better clothes.....

Image

A good solid hour in the shed. I have a pile of castings waiting for attention but this morning was spent muck-shifting to find the crankshaft inside the piece of stock. I have got the finished outside diameter and am now chasing one leg of the shaft. At the same time I have been keeping up with swarf removal..... If you don't it overwhelms you.

Morning

Its cold windy and wet but should brighten up this afternoon. There is not much to do this morning, a bit of last minute tidying of the new room, a sweep through downstairs, clean the kitchen and put the washing away. We shall leave here for St Malo about 1.30 ish calling in to see Laetitia and Yves before we go. It has been a very unsociable visit this time. Joanne and Paul have gone to Spain in their caravan for three months ( not my idea of fun, living in a caravan that length of time) we kept away from Bertram and Elisabeth because of our colds, and of course kept away from Laetitia because of the risk of covid. However it has been a very productive 10 days and we are happy with our efforts.

As I said yesterday we were finishing off. We didn’t get the blue walls painted or the stone wall treated . The latter will be painted with a glue water mix to stop it shedding dust and bits. It really needs pointing but is far too big a task for us and too expensive to pay someone, so we have opted for the ‘ESCAPE TO THE CHATEAU’ method. It will be a long slow job. However the room is very presentable and functional and I shall put a photo on later. My last job last night was to vacuum the whole floor and wash it, whilst Bob started wiring up the lights, which also won’t be finished till next visit. It all looks so much cleaner and fresher than when we came. I should have taken a ‘before’ picture. The biggest job yesterday was trying to dry the washing as it started to rain before any drying had taken place. We put the dehumidifier in the laundry room to help the drying process and have decided to invest in one of the Lakeland airer dryers before our next trip.

We will be back home very late tomorrow. The ferry crossing looks to be rough Bob won’t like that. Have a good day all

Morning Sue. Yes, I noted the forecast of very strong winds tomorrow in the Channel. I hope it isn't too bad.....

I've had an hour in the shed and here's where I finished up. I am pleased with progress. BTW, I have cleaned up the swarf again as I went along.

Image

Just one pic covers it. This morning I finished this leg of the shaft and marked the stock for the next stage which is to mill out the excess material from inside the webs of the shaft. Before that can be done I shall finish the other end to 2" and mark the PCD for the crank pin. But that's for tomorrow.....

Started the remembrance cross distribution at Gill this afternoon. Managed to get the cemetery done apart from about 5 or 6 who are ""unfound" this year. Quite a few headstones have been laid down, I do wish they would lay them inscription side up though! Here is the Strava track:

Image

It took a bit longer than 18 minutes though. I have Strava set to only record moving time so standing still and scanning the headstones and laying the crosses doesn't add to the time.

Churchyard tomorrow hopefully.

I know! Imagine trying to paint it, thank goodness I already have white hair🤣🤣🤣🤣
Its ok once you are down the steps into the main room. Our plan is that when we sell it is a room with possibilities . A games room for teenagers, a studio for arts, craft, sewing or it can be split into a bedsit for a gite or granny flat. It all adds value . Its certainly better than the dark windowless, access-less space that it was .

Well done Ian.... I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to deliberately lay the stones face down!
I shall be watching the kids as they progress over the Indian Ocean. They are on an A380 and are five and a half hours out of Perth.....
On Terra firma I shall be in the shed working on my crankshaft and then second sleep. Walk will be off I thing because we are promised rain all day again. Thinking about Bob and the channel crossing....

Sue and Bob will be busy travelling home.... Thinking about the Channel still, the forecast is not good.

Image

Going forward with the shaft. I reversed it in the chuck, cut the other end down to 2" diameter faced the end and centred it, then put in the PCD for the centre for the crank pin. I did a bit of muck shifting then cleaned the swarf up, put it in the bin and, as it's November 7th, put the bin out for collection. A good hour.....

Sat waiting at the ferry. They are just loading the lorries. Why do some people never have the correct paperwork. We waited 30 minutes for one person to get their tickets and passports checked. Weather a bit breezy but not bad, its a nasty fine drizzle.

We did the Gill churchyard distribution this morning. Still have a few undiscovered in both the cemetery and the churchyard so I think we will have another sweep before I write up the missing for this year. There are lot of leaves in the churchyard this year.

Image

I had to use Sally's Strava track this morning as I forgot to turn mine off before I drove home which adds an extra mile onto the route! I had to use the snipping tool to save it as it does not allow direct downloading of other users tracks as jpegs.

Nice to bump into Werndy and Col in the parking area just as we were knocking off for the day.
