Hi, My names is James & I'm researching my family history.
I'm currently researching the Belford side of my family & in particular looking for information on the bakers/confectioners my Great Grandma & Grandad owned at 28 Wellhouse Road.
Any stories, photos, even the name as none of my family can recall it.
I believe my Great Grandma started the business from 19 Wellhouse Road around 1911 & moving across the road between 1911-1914.
Also how the café on Skipton Road was related to the business on Wellhouse Road.
Any information would be really appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
James

Re: Belford's Bakers/Confectioners on Wellhouse Road
Morning James, welcome to the site. A name sprang instantly to mind for Skipton Road, George Leeper but it was a mirage because that was a draper's shop. Sorry for that. So I went ro my general index and had a furtle. Here's what I found.
Belford's cafe opposite Bankfield Mill
My wife Nan and brother in law Ian are the daughter and son of John Smith Belford. [He was a member of the council 1922-1926 and died on April 23rd 1938] I think John owned the cafe until 1953/54 (Another John?) when he and his family moved up to Brechin, Scotland. I showed the website (Oneguy) to my wife and it brought back great memories for her. Geoffrey was John's half brother. He passed in August 1988. My father in law John passed on 3 February 1977. Ian lives in Aberdeen, Scotland. I met Nan while stationed with the US navy at Edzell Scotland, RAF Edzell. We married on May Day 1970 and now live at Folsom California, we are both retired. We don't know anything about El Paso and the donkey (?) Ian might know and I have passed this link on to him. I also passed this link to Ray Belford Wilkinson as I am sure he will be interested to He lives at Leyburn, North Yorks.
Belford's cafe
The cafe was a green(?) wooden building opposite Crow Nest Cottages. They got their milk delivered ny West Marton every morning at about 8AM. I can remember doing this in 1956. I remember the smell of old fat . [SG evidence]
Evidence from Bob King 08/09/2005.
I can remember Belford's cafe before WW2. It was the only place in Barlick with a juke box in it, even if we didn't have any pennies to put in it it looked impressive enough. Their son Geoff Belford was part of our gang of lads who played on the rec (the tip!) at Victory park so we did get to go in the cafe without being kicked out as nuisances. We had nowt to spend anyway
When I was at Dotcliffe Mill Belford's were the caterers who supplied hot lunches for the workers every day. They did a lot of trade round Barlick and district and as Stanley has said, must have made a fortune out of local mills and Rolls Royce.
That's what I found James, sorry there isn't more and I hope this was useful.

Re: Belford's Bakers/Confectioners on Wellhouse Road
A quick search of the Barnoldswick and Earby Times online has come up with a wedding on March 3rd 1950 and a 1938 obituary for John Smith Belford. The obituary is in a long column so I've added the page as an attachment.
