Got mail this morning from Andy Ross and it struck me that we need a topic, very popular search term.

My father and mother come from Barnoldswick.
I and my brother were born there too.We came tp live in South Africa in 1963.
I was 3 years old then.
My dad served his time at RollsRoyce.
Anyway , I was looking at pics on the net of Barnoldswick and came across your site,
I ride an Adventure Motorcycle( XT660Z) and didcovered this old beauty in the Desert.
I see you are interested in Steam Engines.

I found this derelict steam crane in an old waterworks quarry near Slaidburn in 1980. I wonder if it's still there?

Glasshouses was a perfect mill and I remember David Sekers (Who did Quarry Bank at Styal) commenting on the fact that if it hadn't been out in the countryside it would have been a wonderful mill for preservation. As it happened, we moved the wheel to QB and it can still be seen there.



Ols steam crane in a quarry near Slaidburn in about 1980. It was active when the nearby reservoir was being built. I wonder what happened to it?

The engine at Stott Park bobbin mill in 1978 before Brown and Pickles refurbished it.

Oakmount Mill engine at Burnley in 1979. At that time it was Sutcliffe and Clarkson's and the mill was still being driven by the engine as a weaving shed. It closed shortly afterwards.

Stanley, wonderful photos! I've just seen your post about an email you received from Andy Ross and the pic of the old steam engine he found in the desert in South Africa. I wonder if he's read E.V. Thompson's novel `Brothers in Arms' about a Cornish engineer using two steam traction engines to transport a gunboat overland from Cape Town to Lake Tanganyika during the First World War? On 1st of August 1923, Charlie Watson the new engineer at Butts, got water in the LP cylinder and cracked the piston. Henry Brown ans Sons cast a new piston at Havre Park and installed it.

The waterwheel and fulling stocks at Higher Mill, Helmshore. About 1980. Still there and demonstrated.

Comrade, have I read somewhere that you renovated the fulling stocks and got them working? Nolic
