Research papers

Post by Stanley »

Over the years I have dug out many interesting items during my researches into the district. Some of these are in the archive but inaccessible, some have never been posted before. I intend to post them all as they will perhaps be as useful or interesting to others as I found them. Some of them aren't strictly local but I think all will interest anyone looking in the same areas I was digging in. Please feel free to copy, quote and enjoy. Prime research can't be copyright! Happy hunting! SCG.

lOTS MORE TO COME wENDY. i SUSPECT i WILL BE QUIETLY CURSED AS PEOPLE LOOK FOR THE NORMAL TOPICS. (bugger caps lock!!!!!)
Mind you, people like John Turner will be pleased and Sue Hayter will notice that the Widdup stuff is re-posted. What a good job I copied all these things just in case. I've got to 2004 in the research.....

I've decided to crash on now I have started so bear with me if there is a week of disruption to the active topics list. It's a p;in I know but the reposts will eventually sink into the background and be available in the site search. I noticed this morning that Google has indexed some of the reposts already. Smart little bots!

The only thing that is suffering is eating. Once I get into the swing and see the results I feel compelled to keep going. Some good stuff is surfacing.....

I enjoyed the Blinkhorn chemical works one because it brought back memories of visiting an old sulphuric acid works when I was doing GCE A level chemistry. We had to wear old shoes for the visit!

Nice to know someone's looking at them! Have a look for Tennant's Stalk as well. I've reached the end of research for 2007 so I'm off for a walk!

The articles, stories etc should draw in lots of interest from people searching on the Web for information. I looked at the Tennant's Stalk page and it had me wondering whether Charles Tennant was the man who gave the name `tennantite' to the mineral known chemically as copper arsenic sulphide which is found in Cornwall. A search on Google shows that the mineral gets its name from Smithson Tennant, another chemist. I've added a bit about both men on the Tennant's Stalk topic. It's fascinating how a little searching always brings up more connections, such as Charles Tennant's link with Charles Macintosh and George Stephenson - they really knew how to `network' in those days!

The good news as far as site access is concerned is that I've posted all the research papers and the site will quietly sort itself out. Glad that's done.... I shall take it easy for the rest of the day!

Well done Stanley, some good stuff in there, been steadily reading since you started posting, could not keep up though! Site is already recovering and unread posts and active topics returning to normal. Thanks for the effort.

Thanks for that Ian. Hard work but very satisfying to be able to recover so much good stuff. I know that eventually Doc will solve the archive indexing problem but in the meantime we have some of the old research available on the new platform. Next time Sue Hayter, John Turner and a few others have a look in they'll have a pleasant surprise. The site search box has something to chew on now but is perhaps a bit too efficient, single word searches bring up a lot of responses.
