COWGILL/COWELL INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 29 December 2004

There is a Cowgill Street in Earby which suggests that Cowgill was the builder.

1822.
Baines Dir. For 1822 notes Joseph Cowgill as Gentleman of Earby. Same directory and also that of 1823 note William Cowgill as being landlord of the Scotchman’s Arms, Barnoldswick. (Later the Station Hotel)

1851 census.
Joseph Cowgill, 22 Barnoldswick Lane, Barnoldswick. 45 years, carter. Wife Mary, 59. William 19, PLW. Christopher, 17, PLW. Ann, 14, PLW. George, 11, scholar. James, Nephew, 15, PLW’s assistant.

1896.
James Cowgill Jnr. Mentioned in Barrett Directory for 1896 as Joiner of King’s terrace, Earby. In same directory John Cowgill is mentioned as living in Earby and being agent for the Refuge Assurance Company. Also in 1896 Barrett; Thomas Cowgill mentioned as farmer at Springs Farm, Barnoldswick.

1899/1901
William H Cowgill of Earby mentioned as having enough shares in the Calf Hall Shed Company to qualify as director.

c.1920.
Jim Cowgill, John Tempest and J W Smith were the founders of Premier Motors, a bus firm who were one of the first to run a Skipton-Barlick service. The Premier terminus on Barlick was the Conservative Club.

1929.
When the present St Joseph’s Catholic church was opened in 1929 Pontifical High Mass was said by Bishop J Cowgill of Leeds who was born at Broughton.

1934
Jim Cowgill was landlord of the cottage at Coolham, Stoneybank, Earby where Fred Inman lived. See LTP 78/AH/12.

c.1950
Frank Cowgill was the office man at Moss Shed.


COWELL ENTRIES:

1889.
Entry in Calf Hall Shed Company minute books notes: ‘Mr Cowell should be asked to put a valve on the feed pipe for washing out the boiler. This would be at Calf Hall Shed and Cowell must have been an engineer.


1892.
Barnoldswick Local Board rate books show Agnes Cowell living at 12 King Street, Barnoldswick. She paid £2-50 rates and same amount as Poor Rate.
