Widdup part two
Sorry for the delay in the production of part two of the first generation, but I have been busy updating my records. These are now current as per December 2004. New information continues to come to light as I have extended my reference sources.
Whilst writing this I am anxiously awaiting more information from my new found relative BARROWFORD JOHN!! The Thomas Widdup identified in the first generation is his ancestor. This is a branch that I have no information about as yet and so I look forward to his contributions

7. Robert, Born ca 1835.
8. James, Born ca 1838.
9. Sarah, Born in 1840.
Joseph WIDDUP, Born in 1810 in Salterforth.
Joseph married Ann 2.9 Born ca 1815 in Salterforth.9The family was living in Salterforth in 18519
According to the 1841 census they had the following children:
1. Lucy, Born ca 1836.
2. Smith, Born ca 1840.
3. Andrew, Born ca 1842.
4. Mary, Born ca 1845.
5. William, Born ca 1847.
A personal note: This family is unusual in that it seems to deviate from the normal family names
The name Smith Widdup appears again in a later generation, the son of Thomas Widdup and Annice Horsfield (1878-1931)
The third generation to follow shortly
Sue, to date I have the following:
Thomas Widdup born 1898/9 at Salterforth (my 3x gtgrandfather), son of John & Martha (nee Edmondson)Widdup.
Thomas married Mary Morrell born 11/7/1801 at Simonstone, the daughter of James and Betty Morrell. James was a gardner for the Huntroyd Estate. James & Betty also had Martha born 1799 at Simonstone and Ann born 1797 at Simonstone who died of convulsions at 1 day old.
On the 1841 census, at Croft Street, Burnley, are:
Thomas Widdup, Sawyer aged 40 not born Lancs
Mary his wife aged 35 (age rounded)born Lancs
Martha their daughter aged 3 born Padiham, Lancs
Joshua lord aged 18 Apprentice Stationer not born Lancs.
Next door to these on Croft Street were:
John Edmondson aged 30 Joiner not born Lancs
Hannah his wife aged 30 born Lancs
Elizabeth their daughter aged 2 born Lancs
Samuel Morrell aged 14 Independent born Lancs.
Now, what is the link here? The fact that John Edmondson lives next door to Thomas widdup (whose mother was an Edmondson) - and a Sam Morrell (the uncommon name of Thomas Widdup's wife)lives with him - and John Edmondson is a joiner appears to show that John could very well be related to Thomas's mother.
In 1841 Croft Street was a newly built street on the edge of a building site.At this time the area of Milton Street and Fulledge Mills were just being erected and therefore there would be a lot of work for Masons, Joiners and Sawyers etc. By the time of the 1861 census Milton Street, at the end of Croft Street, had been built and Thomas was living here:
1861 54 Milton street:
Thomas Widdup h 61 Sawyer b Salterforth
Mary his wife 59 b Simonstone
Thomas W Wilkinson grandson 2 b Burnley
William Dearle? boarder 22 Stonemason b Thornton
Sarah Ann wife 21 b Ayrton
Samuel Whittingham boarder 35 Joiner b Padiham
Martha Widdup, daughter of Thomas & Mary, married William Wilkinson, a Journeyman Stonemason from Burnley.
1871 census Nelson Street, Nelson:
William Wilkinson 34 Master Stonemason b Burnley
Martha his wife 33 Cotton weaver b Padiham
Thomas W 12 son weaver b Burnley
Benjamin Morrell Wilkinson 8 son b Burnley
John Henry (my gtgfather)son 1 born Hill Top, Foulridge
James 2 months b Hill Top, Foulridge
Mary Widdup 70 widow Annuitant
All the men to date have been in the building trade. In 1869/70 William Wilkinson and family lived at Hill top in foulridge. He possibly met Possibly met his wife Martha Widdup through her father being in the same line of work. This may be why he lived in Foulridge for a while as his father-in-law's family were based in that area.
In 1891 Martha Wilkinson is a widow and living at 26 Charles Street, Nelson. her son Benjamin Morrell Wilkinson, a weaver, is living with her along with his wife Alice, son Harry Morrell, dtr Elizabeth and son Fred. Martha's son John Henry, a cotton loomer and twister, is also living there. This family are NOWHERE on the 1881 census of Britain.I recall a story that my late uncle told me of one of the Wilkinsons (who were all on the large side) coming home from a good night out, was accosted by a constable where the Nelson health centre (Leeds Road) now stands. Words were exchanged and the Wilkinson lifted said constable above his head and threw him bodily into the "goit" (the deep cut where Walverden Water runs through the town). Fearing that he had killed the policeman Wilkinson legged it abroad somewhere. As I don't know the identity of the particular family member I can only guess that this may be why the family disappeared for a while.
In 1894 my gtgrandfather, John Henry Wilkinson, married Mary Jane Eastwood a weaver of Nelson, dtr of John Eastwood, also a weaver of Nelson. At the same time his brother married Mary Jane's sister Phoebe.
1901 census 16 Elizabeth Street, Nelson:
John Henry Wilkinson h 31 loomer and twister
Mary Jane wife 27 weaver
Sarah E dtr 6
Alfred d son 4
Ormerod 3 son
May dtr 1 (my grandmother)
My grandmother often told my mother that her father, John Henry Wilkinson, had "gambled away two fortunes" at the Rouse Club on Clayton Street in Nelson.
