GEORGE SMITH. INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 06 February 2005

George Smith.
LTP transcript 78/AB/04. Billy Brooks talks about sett making at Sagar’s quarries and mentions George Smith who later became a grocer.

In ‘A Way of Life Gone By’ page 68 there is a report that George Smith, Fred Smith’s grandfather was a ganger working on the Carlisle Settle line but moved to Barlick because there was work in the mills for his daughters. He worked at Hollins Farm as a farm man on five shillings a week and later moved to the quarry. His son Tom Smith opened a daity on Rainhall Road and hawked milk around the town.

1851 census.
Barnoldswick, Hey. George Smith, 32, labourer. Ann, wife, 36. Thomas, 12. Dorothy, 6. Margaret, 3.

1902 Barrett directory.
George Smith is noted as greengrocer , Church Street, Bbarnoldswick.

1930 onwards.
George Smith member of the Council 1930/33 and 1935/1947. Chairman 1941/42. Described as Justice of the Peace so he was a lay magistrate as well.

1881 census
There are 78 Smiths in the 1881 census but no mention of George.

Smith is of course a very common name. You need to look in the 1901 census for Barlick and possibly some of the later ones as well. Once you have pinned your particular George down you can start to make progress. There are also passenger lists, any archivist will show you how to access these. Good Luck!!
