GRAMMAR SCHOOL EARBY. INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 14 November 2005

[I’ve included some entries on the general subject of education as they do, of course, have a bearing on the entries specific to the Grammar School]

Key dates for School leaving:-
1880 Education Act [EA] set school leaving age [SLA] at 10 years
1893 EA raised SLA to 11
1899 EA raised SLA to 12
1902 EA raised SLA to 13
1918 EA raised SLA to 14 and abolished half-timing. [beware of this one, I have found evidence that there were local exemptions for essential industries until 1922 and it is a mistake to assume that all half-timing was stopped by the 1918 Act.]
1944 EA raised SLA to 15.

1811
National Schools founded under the auspices of the ‘National Society for the education of the Poor in the principles of the Established Church.

1822
Langdale topographical directory 1822 states: Earby Grammar Scholl was founded by Robert Windle Esq. in 1594 with £20 per annum. Free for reading for boys within the parish of Thornton in Craven.

1930
In a report in CH 23/05/1930 there is a tantalising reference to a discussion in the Council Education Committee to a strike of schoolchildren in Kelbrook. No details given.

c.1930
LTP. 78/AH/05. Fred Inman talks about the Old Grammar School being used by business men and manufacturers as a Gentleman’s Club and he suggests there may have been gambling there.

1936
CH 24/07/1936. John Hartley article refers to a dame school in Water Street in what are now the lock-up shops next to the Victoria Mill site and run by Mrs Austerberry before the days of compulsory education. It was regarded as the infant school preparing pupils for the Grammar School.
