1880?
LTP. 78/AB/05. Page 9. Billy Brooks said that Mark Hacking started in business as a baker on Manchester Road with his brother Stephen. This building was on the spare piece of land below Mitchell Terrace across from what used to be Bethesda Baptist church. [Later Billy confused me by saying that the bakehouse was opposite the Baptist church and on Manchester Road] They were oat or haver cake bakers and hawked them around the town. Later Stephen built the bakehouse on Gisburn Road below Gott’s Garage. His daughter Sally kept it in SCG’s time and it was a general confectioners and bakers. [November 2002: Harry Purcell told me that the original bakery started by the Hacking family was in Walmsgate on the site where the New Ship chapel was built. When they had to move from there Hacking borrowed money from Herbert Hoggarth and set up shop in premises on the top side of Monks house [old barn later became La Mode dress shop, now Cloister Cottage] From there they moved to the new premises in Gisburn Road.]
1892
UD Barnoldswick rate books 1892. Entry no 546. William Brooks owned a stable on King Street and numbers 8, 10 and 12.The tenant of number 8 was Emma Hacking who paid £2-10-0 Poor Rate and £2-10-0 house rate. [This would be for half a year.]
1909
Harry Purcell told me that the baker’s shop in Gisburn Road was built in 1909 with a bakehouse and stables at the back. It had four bedrooms, the living accommodation and the shop. He said that when Jim Marsh the clogger across the road shut his shop in the 1930s Hackings bought the wooden hut and used it as a garage for years.
1911
Textile Mercury of 15/04/1911. Report that Barnsey Shed Company was registered on March 4th 1911. The capital was £20,000 in £1 shares. Registered office at Yorkshire Bank Chambers. First directors were: E Smith, T Edmondson, M Pilkington, C Waller, M Hacking, S Yates, A Hargreaves, W Patrick, J W Pickup.
1914
LTP. 78/AB/03. Page 8. Billy Brooks mentions that Mark Hacking started at the new shed at Barnsey as a taper and wanted Billy to go with him. [It looks as though Mark didn’t go into the new business in Gisburn Road with Stephen] Mark Hacking had been partner in the haver cake bakery on Manchester Road with Stephen his brother and was one of the promoters of Barnsey Shed. Page 8. Billy says that Mark Hacking had money in New Coates shed as well. Hacking told Billy he could be a director at Barnsey for £100 but he hadn’t the money. He told Billy that they had bought the land for Barnsey and at that time [1911] it was farmed by Dick Holden. Mark Hacking told Billy that on the way back from clinching the land sale in Skipton they met the tenant, Dick Holden who was on his way to Skipton to buy the farm. They told him he was too late.
1927/1936
Stephen Hacking was a member of BUDC 1927/1936. Died December 26 1948.
1930s
LTP. 78/AK/02. Page 12. Emma Clark talks about her younger brother Joe learning to play the violin and playing at Sunday School with Harry Purcell who was father to Tom Purcell who later married Sally Hacking. Sally’s younger sister Jenny played the violin and learned with Mr Peckover.
August 2005
Harry Purcell told me that the building which is now Stanley House Vets on Skipton Road above Forester’s Buildings used to be three cottages. The bottom two were occupied by the Misses Ormerod who sold china and glass. The top third was a cobblers at one time, (Wynn’s). He also said that when Hackings catered for weddings and funerals at the Liberal Hall they used to hire plates, cutlery and glasses from the Ormerod’s.
October 2004
Dorothy Carthy told me that Harry Purcell was an only child by his mother Jenny who was sister to Sally Hacking. The business was known as S&J Hacking (the maiden names of Sally and Jenny). Billy Brooks had told me previously that Sally and Jenny were Stephen’s daughters.
