CROASDALE FAMILY INDEX ENTRIES (revised)

The first thing to say is that Croasdale name probably originates in the Croasdale Fell area NW of Slaidburn. The usual lists of surnames suggest it is a corruption of Crossdale which may well be true.

INDEX ENTRIES FOR BARLICK CROASDALES. AS OF 31 August 2006.

1717.
The 1717 estate map for Bracewell notes Henry Croasdill [sic] as tenant of Hawber, Little Hawber and land on Haber.

1717.
Same map shows Thos. Croasdill as being tenant of Gilliber and Gilliber Carr.

1753
Barnoldswick Land and Window Tax rolls note:

1792
In a partnership agreement signed on March 20th 1792 Richard Croasdill of Marton Scarr advanced a quarter of the capital needed to purchase the water rights of the old corn mill at Dale End Lothersdale and build a new water powered spinning mill, Lothersdale Mill at a cost of £1500. The mill was insured with the Royal Exchange Fire Office in 1793. This mill still stands and has what is probably the biggest indoor water wheel in the country.

1795.
List of local shareholders in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal notes Ellen Croasdill of Marton as having 2 shares. [“In December 1768 the Lancashire and Yorkshire Committee met at Burnley where Brindley (the engineer) proposed a share price of £100 with interest at 5% to meet the estimated cost of £259,777.” (Dr Gary Firth; ‘The L&L canal in Yorkshire’) so this was a major investment in 1795.]

1896
Barrett directory notes Joseph Croasdale, tailor, 17 Westgate.

1902
Barrett 1902 notes Miss Alice Croasdale as living at Glen View.
