ORMEROD INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 14 October 2006

1770
Thomas Ormerod pays land tax of 14/3 for ‘Hey’ in 1770. Also paid 7/1 ½ for ‘Town End’ in the same year.

c.1870
Edmondson Ormerod’s started weaving on a small scale as tenants in Clough Mill.

1887
Barrett’s Directory notes Edmondson Ormerod as cotton manufacturer at Long Ing Shed.

1892
Ormerods were tenants at 1892.

1896
Barrett’s Directory reports John Ormerod as being a taper and living at 3 Clough Terrace, Barnoldswick.

1896
Barrett’s Directory reports Joseph Ormerod as being a warehouseman and living at 2 Clough Terrace, Barnoldswick.

1902
Barrett’s directory notes Thomas Ormerod as overlooker and living on Albert Road, Barnoldswick.

1912
Manchester Royal Exchange Directory notes that Edmondson Ormerod Ltd were weaving as tenants at Moss Shed with 432 looms.

1920-1980s?
The three converted cottages on Skipton Road to the south of Forrester’s Buildings were a single pot shop run by the Misses Ormerod. Harry Purcell told me that when Hackings bakers used to do outside catering for weddings and funerals they hired plates, glasses and cutlery off the Misses Ormerod.

1930s
LTP. 78/AC/05. page 4. Ernie Roberts mentions a tackler and Methodist in the 1930s called Harry Ormerod at Long Ing who was known to be hard on his weavers.

1931
Craven Herald 12/06/1931. Report of a sale of 432 looms with associated preparation machinery at Moss Shed, property of E Ormerod Ltd for £515.

1931
Craven Herald 23/01/1931. Report of a claim for compensation at Skipton County Court against Ernest Ormerod, confectioner of 1 Church Street Barnoldswick. The claim was brought be Horace James Rawlinson, baker, of 7 Robert Street Barnoldswick. He claimed he contracted ‘baker’s rash’ or dermatitis whilst in the employ of Ormerod. The claim was rejected as he had not reported the facts during the statutory period.
