SINGLETON PRAYER BOOK

Adrian Slinger has given me a prayer book that was found about 30 years ago in a cupboard in a house on Far East View. It is well worn and has been repaired by stitching it together with fine string. Printed at Oxford by the Clarendon Press, it is 5” X 3” and incredibly small print, God knows how they read it by candlelight. Inside the front cover it says “ Thos. Singleton, His prayer book 1786. Don’t steal this book for shame because hear [sic] you see the Owner’s name” In the back it is signed on the flyleaf “Thomas Singleton” The there is a list of names and dates: “Agnas [sic] Singleton was born February 20th 1794. Elling [sic] Singleton was born June 19th 1796. George Singleton was born September 19th year 1798. Jenney [sic] Singleton daughter to Thomas and Elling Singleton was born the 16th of October 1784. January 31st 1797 [no name, death of Jenney?] Betty Singleton was born August the 13th 1789. Moses [?] Singleton was born July 1st [no year]. George Singleton was born 1792. April the 5th 1801 John Singleton was born. April the 27th 1805 Ann Singleton was born. September the 29th 1808 Margaret Singleton was born. Ellen Singleton, mother to the above children departed this life December the 9th 1834 aged 72.
