Christopher Hartley of Barnoldswick married Margaret Knowles of Bracewell at either Bracewell or Barnoldswick in 1612.

1843
Pigot directory mentions Henry Knowles as a cotton manufacturer in Barnoldswick. Same directory notes Henry Knowles as being the publican at the Cross Keys.

1848
H Knowles mentioned as elector of Barnoldswick. Address given as Reedley, near Burnley.

1851 census
Elizabeth Knowles on Jepp Hill, widow, 36, pauper (bobbin winder). Margaret, daughter, 6, pauper. John, son, 2, pauper. Ann Starkie, sister to Elizabeth, 26, Winder. [Ann not noted as widow or married so Starkie looks like the maiden name.]

1851 census
Ormerod Knowles, Stoops Gate, 62, farmer of 9 acres. Lived alone.

1871 census
James Knowles, Causeway Carr Farm, 47, carpenter and farmer of 12 acres.

1887
Barrett directory mentions Watson Knowles as shopkeeper at 6 Hill Street. In 1896 same directory mentions him as Grocer and draper at 6Hill Street.

1889
Watson Knowles mentioned in the Calf Hall Shed Company Minutes as engineer at Calf Hall Shed on a wage of 24/- a week. [11/09/1889] Seems to have left the job of engineer as a new one was appointed on 14/11/1890. In 1901 he is mentioned as qualified to act as a director of the CHSC.

1890
John Knowles is mentioned in the minute books of the Calf Hall shed company when he was employed as a labourer at £1 a week. (16/07/1890)

1926
Frederick Knowles noted as member of the Council 1926-1932. Died Feb 2 1954.

c.1930
In his book ‘This Is My Life’ Jim Griffiths says that a man called Knowles had a confectioner’s shop on Church Street.
