Around 1950 there were three types of milk can or kit designed for moving the milk from farm to dairy. There was the straight sided galvanised iron 10 Gallon kit which was perhaps the most numerous. Then there were the Conical 'railway kits' like the ones in the image which were 17 gallons. They were sometime augmented by the larger straight sided galvanised iron kits which held 15 Gallons. Next there were the very common 12 Gallon straight sided iron kits which were the ones we used at West Marton. Late in the day the universal kit was the straight sided aluminium 10 Gallon can.
So the correct answer was they are 17 Gallon railway kits.
Now we need another object.

No Cathy. I can see why you thought that. It's made of galvanised steel, in effect a fancy bucket for a particular job.
