Sorry Tom, no. I shan't let this lie about for long. There's more to milk kits than you might think!

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Around 1950 there were three types of milk can or kit designed for moving the milk from farm to dairy. There was the straight sided galvanised iron 10 Gallon kit which was perhaps the most numerous. Then there were the Conical 'railway kits' like the ones in the image which were 17 gallons. They were sometime augmented by the larger straight sided galvanised iron kits which held 15 Gallons. Next there were the very common 12 Gallon straight sided iron kits which were the ones we used at West Marton. Late in the day the universal kit was the straight sided aluminium 10 Gallon can.
So the correct answer was they are 17 Gallon railway kits.
Now we need another object.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
No Cathy. I can see why you thought that. It's made of galvanised steel, in effect a fancy bucket for a particular job.

Yes Wendy, well done. It's the only one I have ever seen and I still regret not saving it.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
There is obviously no interest in this object so I shall knock it on the head. Part of the process of surveying and inspecting s steam boiler is thast every ten years it must undergo a hydraulic pressure test that takes it to 50% over working pressure and this is done by pumping water in until the pressure is reached Then the pressure has to be maintained for long enough to satisfy the surveyor.
John Ingoe was a qualified surveyor under the act and in the image he is observing the Ten Year test on the Ellenroad Boiler.
[Just as a matter of interest, we tested and certified to the original working pressure and not the much lower figure we ran at for demonstration. It passed with no problems.]
Now we need another object, any volunteers?
